Advantages: Some nice food, can be good value
Disadvantages: Not always very tasty
I am not the biggest lover of fast food chains although it was all a massive treat when I was a child. I think now I have a bit of an idea as to what I am actually eating it has lost its appeal a bit. I still do go to fast food chains occasionally though especially when I cannot be bothered to cook. Today I was round a friend's house and we were all feeling a little worse for wear so we decided that we would get a KFC.
KFC stands for Kentucky Fried Chicken and as the name suggests it is a fast food restaurant that sells chicken products. KFC has been in the UK for quite a while now and there is one in pretty much every town. The shops sell as I said a variety of chicken products. There are loads of different options to choose from which makes it quite a good choice. The majority of these though are chicken so if you don't like this, you are a bit out of luck. One thing that KFC does that a lot of other fast food restaurants is family sized meals. You can get bargain buckets which have a number of pieces of chicken, depending on the size of the bucket you went for, and also a few portions of chips. This is a good choice if you are looking for something basic for a few people. They also do the family feast which includes chicken, fries, sides and a bottle of drink as well. These cost around 12 pounds so are quite good value if you are feeding four people. Other bucket options include the variety buckets and deluxe boneless box. These are different options if you do not like the bones or want something a bit different. Apart from the buckets there are lots of other options for meals including original recipe chicken meals for one person. They also do burger meals a bit like places like McDonalds. These are obviously chicken burgers though. These are slightly different to other places though as you get a side order with them normally. The sides include coleslaw, beans and corn on the cob. KFC also do chicken strips, popcorn chicken, wraps and salads so pretty much way you could imagine breaded chicken. KFC also do a number of deserts including Avalanches, their version of a Mcflurry. KFC are slightly different to the other fast food outlets in that the drinks they provide are not the usual Coca Cola, Fanta they are instead Pepsi and Tango. This is one downside as personally I prefer coca cola to Pepsi. I could carry on listing all the food options but I would be here all day. You can see that they have a lot to choose from anyway, if you like chicken that is.
KFC claim to have a secret ingredient to their chicken. This is claimed in the adverts to have come from the Colonel's recipe. He is the face of their advertising. I used to absolutely love the chicken in KFC but recently I have found it to be much too greasy. You get napkins but your hands will literally be covered in grease by the time you have finished. This does put me off quite a lot when eating it. Not only does it feel greasy but it does taste pretty greasy as well. I tend to go for other options now instead of the usual chicken pieces as it does make me feel a little ill. I do quite like the fillet burgers and the twister wraps as well. These are quite tasty and enjoyable to eat. One thing I don't like about KFC is the chips. These are no way near as nice as those at Burger King and McDonalds. They are a bit wet and I much prefer a crisps chip like those at Burger King. They also don't salt them, you have to add your own. This is probably quite good for those who are trying to watch how much salt they eat. The sides are tasty , the beans in particular are my favourite side. This is great for dipping your chips in. I haven't had any of the coleslaw though since I heard how much fat and calories it has in it! Overall in terms of tastiness there are some good options but there are also some not so good. It is probably based on personal taste but you will have to try and see what you like.
KFC restaurants are usually very clean and tidy. They keep the area where you can eat clean so you do not worry about eating on the tables. They do provide tables and chairs for you to sit down and eat but you can also take away. Some of the shops also have a drive through as well.
One area where they do let themselves down is the speed of service. Compared to other fast food restaurants they do tend to be quite slow. I have found these in a number of their restaurants so it isn't just in the one I go to most. There is usually quite a long queue as it takes a while for people to get served. I have also found on a couple of occasions that they have forgotten to give us an item, which can be annoying when you have got home and found this. I think if they managed to speed up the service a little this would improve the general experience.
In terms of value for money KFC is fairly cheap but not always great quality so I would say it is not always good value for money. You can get quite a lot for your money but this isn't always good. The meals though are around the same price as most fast food restaurants and are good value for money.
Overall KFC is a nice treat every now and then but it isn't always the most enjoyable experience.
Summary: An OK fast food restaurant

- 07/06/09 I find their boned fried chicken to be too greasy to contemplate so I sympathise with you. The boneless chicken isn't so bad and I like how they have a few vegetable options for sides. Nicely done. |
