Advantages: Tasty
Disadvantages: More expensive than competitors, potential controversy
KFC is one of my favourite fast food places, mainly because I'm not a big fan of red meat and the chicken at KFC is very moreish.
Several years back it was a place I'd never go to, firstly because there weren't any nearby, and secondly because the vast majority of choices had skin and/or bone, which I hate. Now though, the menu has far more choices on it and there is one near to where my parents live (within walking distance). How times have changed eh?
Though the menu is still very much chicken based (and I wouldn't ever go there or recommend it to a vegetarian) there are now chicken zinger burgers, wraps, popcorn chicken and boneless options such as strips. They are most famous for their buckets of chicken and their 'feed the family deals', though we rarely go for those because everyone always seems to like the same part of the bucket and dislike the rest! More recently they have brought out small snack boxes and large boxed meals, so they do seem to be catering for more tastes while not adding anything overly complicated to the menu.
You can also choose from a variety of sides such as corn on the cob, gravy, chips etc. The chips are no longer salted and personally I don't like them as much as the ones from McDonalds or Burger King. They aren't great.
They also do ice creams similar to McDonalds' Mcflurries.
I personally go for the salsa wrap at KFC because it's nice and well toasted, the chicken is tasty and the salad fresh. It's also more interesting than just plain chicken. I do like the popcorn chicken too though!
KFC has been under criticism for unethical use of chickens in the past (battery etc. - not just killing them). I'm not sure where I stand on this debate because it seems a bit ironic to complain about their lives when they will be killed anyway. Then again, the quality of the chicken just isn't as good if they are poorly reared.
Finally, KFC is considerably more expensive than other fast food places, though depending what you buy you may get more for your money. Occasionally with things like the buckets, they will get a bit soggy which isn't too pleasant.
KFC is hideously unhealthy, but what else do you expect from a fast food joint serving fried chicken? Best enjoyed in moderation.
Summary: Good now and then as a treat

but there is a local 'chicken stop' which is pretty much the same concept, spicier and cheaper so i tend to go there now... cant beat their corn on the cob though...hmmmm!
I have also heard the bad chicken stories about kfc.

- 10/07/09 A good write-up. I used to love KFC, but I haven't been near one (or BK or McD's) since reading Fast Food Nation a few years ago. 8^) |
