Advantages: Great chicken, beand and corn

Disadvantages: Although the range has increased it still is just chicken

Colonel Harland Sanders spent much of his early life looking after his younger siblings and cooking for the family. In 1930 at the ago of 40 he operated a service station in Corbin, Kentucky for hungry travellers and used the living quarters to serve their meals. In reality he invented what was then called Home Meal Replacement - selling complete meals to busy time-strapped families, calling it Sunday Dinner, 7 days a week.

In 1955 he devoted himself to developing the franchise business and within 10 years had more than 600 franchises across the USA and Canada, selling his interest in the US company in 1964. In 1986 it became part of Pepsico and in 1997 became part of an independent restaurant company Tricon Global Restaurants. Today KFC is part of Yum! Brands and has over 32,500 outlets in 100 countries and territories.

Until he died from Leukemia in 1980 at the age of 90 he travelled 250,000 miles a year visiting franchises.

There's no doubt that of the fast food outlets, KFC is as attractive todays as it was when Colonel Sanders first developed his unique blend of 11 herbs and spices and the basic cooking technique he developed still exists to this day.

When you think of it, how many other outlets that are still in existence can say they still rely in essence on 1 selling product? Yes, it has developed so they now sell chicken burgers, strips, popcorn chicken, beans, gravy and coleslaw, but the essential ingredient still remains.

Yes, it is greasy and my experience of the chips is poor as they always tend to be cold and tasteless, but there's no doubt we go there for chicken and it is delicious.

When I first visited a KFC with my dad over 20 years ago their range was simply pieces of chicken, beans, coleslaw, gravy and corn with the range of fizzy drinks on tap.

These days 10, 12 a 14 piece bargain buckets are our normal way of buying mainly using the drive-in facilities nearby, and at £9.99 for the smallest one served with 4 bags of fries is very good value in comparison to the likes of McDonalds and Burger King. In fact, our biggest problem is actually eating it as my partner's 13 year old daughter will eat a whole 10 piece bucket on her own if we let her (no not all in one go, but she'll eat it for dinner, supper and breakfast).

My favourite, although much more expensive is the boneless box, offering 8 or 12 mini strips, 2 popcorn chicken, 4 fries, 2 sides, dipping sauces and a 1.5 litre bottle.

There are 2 things that I dislike - as a franchise the service level at some outlets is appauling, and try blaming mistakes on the customers when they forget parts of you meal, and the quality of chicken - they use most of the chicken so some bits have hardly any meat on them!

On several occassions I have had cause to drive back to the same outlet for missing items. However, the outlet which used to be my "local" has some very poor service levels, and someone accidentally spilt coke on the floor, yet would not deal with it rather than keep serving. In my view, (and as a risk assessor for my work area) conditions were such that there was a significant risk in customer injury - slippery floor and wet conditions. I still use KFC, just not that outlet.

KFC is definitely one of my preferred choices and is "Finger Lickin' Good"

Summary: For a fast delicious tasting evenig meal its fantastic
