Advantages: Very tasty food, great atmosphere, very good value
Disadvantages: Odd location and hard to park outside
Mamma Lizzy's is a Mexican restaurant located halfway down the very busy Tettenhall Road in Wolverhampton. I think it tends to get overlooked because of its location, the road is horrendously busy and there is no real parking directly outside, the restaurant is also situated in the basement of one of the large victorian terraces and only has a small sign - it is therefore easy to miss if you do not know it is there.
This restaurant is well worth seeking out though and to the best of my knowledge is one of the only (non chain) Mexican restaurants for miles around. The food is good even if the setting is unconventional and you really cannot beat a good meal of fajitas accompanied by a cold Corona with lime in the top to leave you feeling very satisfied and happy.
This place is particularly popular with the city's student population which is likely to be because the Tettenhall Rd is littered with student accomodation and is the central route in and out of town. This also means that word of mouth have done this place a service and it is not uncommon on weekends to find the place heaving with young people and the atmosphere quite literally buzzing!
The menu is full of all the quintessential classics you would expect in a Mexican restaurant, the fajitas and enchiladas are particularly good and the chilli is very tasty if a little hot for me (although the waitress did warn me of this when I ordered!).
They also do a range of more traditional dishes featuring chicken, beef and vegetables which I have never heard of before, some of these are served on a sizzing hot skillet at the table and make for a dramatic centrepiece. Sides of refried beans, soft flour tortillas and sliced jalapenos add to the authentic feel of the food.
I have eaten here as part of a large group from work and we thoroughly enjoyed it, it was also notable that despite 12 of us ordering our food all came at the same time and was all hot. We had booked in advance for this kind of group which is probably advisable as aside from anything else the dining area itself is not huge and you may struggle to be seated if you turned up en-masse and without warning.
Service is very good, attentive and polite without being overbearing. I have never had a problem here and always tip well as they certainly earn it!
In general we can usually eat for around £15 a head plus a few quid more for drinks, its easy to see why the students love it so much.
All in all this is a great restaurant serving very tasty and very good value food, cooked to order and with a great authentic feel to it. The atmosphere is good and the only downside is the slightly awkward location, however, it is well worth visiting and you can find parking in the side streets that run off the Tettenhall Rd at intervals and where the traffic is much quieter.
Summary: Very good restaurant in Wolverhampton, well worth a visit.
