This place, located in the fairly nice, newish Overgate shopping centre, on the upper level, looks very enticing - like a proper artisan ice-cream (and maybe cake, but I think they are all ice-cream gateaux) shop. There are numerous flavours, fancy cones and prettily dressed (though a little bit gormless in closer contact) shop assistants. I was always tempted and then one day decided to give it a try - and what a horrible disappointment!!! The ice-cream was dreadful, with a strange sticky creaminess but with no intensity of flavour apart from being very sweet. You can have the ice-creams mixed up (mushed-up, more likley) with various things (from sprinkles to fruit to nut) and maybe it was a mistake to go for the bare stuff from the freezer, but it should have tasted of something - and it didn't. At some stupidly over-the top price (though portions are large) that pushes a fiver, this was a huge disappointment. It reminded me of ice-creams we had in Canada in few locations, almost always disappointing (apart from one place in Vancouver) and I suspect this might be an American influence. Give me Italian, Russian or even Slovenian ice cream any day instead of this overpriced pap.
I discovered Marble Slab ice cream shop by accident, the kids had gone swimming in the Olympia pool by Dundee docks and I had wandered over to the Overgate shopping centre for some retail therapy and upstairs nestled between the fast food joints was a shop that caught my eye with a glass fronted freezer filled with the most amazing ice cream cakes that I had ever seen. Intrigued, I decided to have a look inside. Marble Slab is an American ice cream parlour which has hit the shores of the UK opening its first shop in the unlikely location of Dundee. It sells an amazing array of ice creams, ice cream cakes, milkshakes and hot drinks and is the ideal place to stop for a treat. The array of ice cream flavours to choose from is vast from the simple vanilla and chocolate to more exotic offerings such as cheesecake or maple. The difference between Marble Slab and other ice cream joints is the range of additional mix ins that are available which are mixed in front of your eyes on a marble slab. The mix ins include fresh strawberries or raspberries, marshmallows, nuts and some uniquely American flavours such as gummy bears or Oreo cookies. The range of mix ins is totally amazing and the fact that some of the American flavours are not available elsewhere in the UK makes it a real novelty to visit. The ice cream comes in massive portion size, the standard sized ice cream costs around £4, they do not advertise this on the board but a child sized ice cream with two normal sized scoops is available for around half the price and would be what is considered to be a large ice cream in the UK. The ice cream is served either in huge waffle cones or equally huge edible waffle bowls. The ice cream tastes absolutely divine, the flavours are obviously made with top quality ingredients giving a real vibrancy and intensity to the taste. The fact that the mix ins are fresh too adds to the appeal and you can customise your ice cream how you like. The ice cream cakes are available in small cupcake size for £2 each and are also amazing, you need to give them a couple of minutes to soften slightly but once you dig past the icing and discover ice cream and cookies then the wait is worth it. They have huge ice cream cakes on display which look truly amazing with flavours like caramel peanut butter crisp with equally large price tages but they would make good birthday cakes. As well as ice cream and cakes there are also milkshakes, again with your choice of ice cream flavours and mix ins added. The coffee is very reasonably priced at just £1 a cup and was nice and strong. I love Marble Slab for the high quality treats on offer but because of the high prices and high calorie food it will remain a very occasional treat.
