 ... cave, because the whole place is actually built into the rocks with the more conventional building jutting out from the rocks. There is a heated open terrace complete with tables and chairs, and this area looks out onto the beach. The bar is in the middle of the room, and go behind this, and you are in the "pirate's cave". JUST BEEN FOR A MEAL[09/02/07] ARRIVED 20 02 SERVED FIRST FOOD 20 52. WHY DID IT TAKE SO LONG. FOOD OK BUT NOT ENOUGH OF IT. I HAD THE FILLET OF BEEF ,COULD HAVE PUT COMPLETE DINNER ON A SAUCER. TEMP. IN ROOM FREEZING NO WONDER REST. EMPTY.

Quite a famous place, situated as it is close to the Marsden rock, which unfortunately collapsed (in part) in 1996. In the 1700s, Jack the blaster came to live here, and apparantly supplied refreshments to smugglers. His successor excavated a ballroom out of the rock, and created a hotel here, and in 1898, Vaux and Sons took over the lease, building the lift in the 1930s, to bring visitors down to the beach. The building which stands here now is flat roofed, not very attractive, and needs a face lift; however, it obviously "works" as it is because the place is always busy.
