Advantages: Good meat and good food, Arrives hot, Reliable
Disadvantages: None
McChina is a Chinese take-away on Haydons Road, Wimbledon, SW19. They used to have a restaurant on one side of the road, and a take-away on the other side of the road, called, 'Wok Away'. The restaurant is no more, but the take-away remains, and has assumed the name McChina. So, why would you consider ordering from McChina? Here's a few reasons: 1) Free home delivery with orders over £12, within a 3 mile radius. 2) Credit and debit cards accepted over the phone, as well as cash/cheque at the door. 3) Any food cooked for you, even if it's not on the menu - all you have to do is tell them how you want it. 4) Good quality food, with good quality meat. I won't lie to you, and tell you that McChina make the best Chinese food you will ever taste. But what is true, is that it IS decent quality, and they are very consistent. I have been ordering from them for almost 6 years, and I've never had a reason to complain. One very important factor is that the meat is good quality. If you order beef, it isn't that fatty, gristly stuff that you can't chew. If you order chicken, you won't get that quelchy soft stuff that you don't even need teeth to eat. And if you order the duck and pancakes, you get a generous portion of beautiful duck with too many pancakes, to ensure that the duck runs out first. There is a wide selection of food available. All the typical old favourites that you would expect from any Chinese take-away are there, plus many more. A main course will set you back around £4 (seafood a little bit extra), while rice/noodles are around £3. You can even get desserts - banana, pineapple or apple fritters. Four different set-meals offer excellent value. Here's an example (this is the one that I get most often): Set Meal A - Minimum 2 people - £8.50 each Crispy Aromatic Duck Sweet and Sour Pork Hot & Spicy Chicken (
has yummy cashew nuts in it!) Four Seasons and Mixed Vegetables Egg Fried Rice x2 Prawn Crackers Believe me, with that little lot, you'll be eating Chinese for brunch the next day as well! Or perhaps you can't decide what you want? No problem, you can select the Surprise Dinner Box, which consists of starter, main course and a sweet, all for £6.75. It doesn't have to remain a surprise - you can ask them what it is before ordering it! The contents change every week! Delivery times are normally between 30-40 mins (I tend to only order at 'peak' times, so it may be quicker on a Mon-Thurs). However, if you are prepared to collect the food yourself, it is normally ready in 10-15 minutes. If you actually go to the take-away itself, you will see that the kitchens are open-planned, and you can see the food being cooked from behind the counter. That's always a good sign in a Chinese take-away, I think (anyone had their cat go missing recently?) The kitchen and shop front are clean, as are the staff. The food arrives in a sealed cardboard box. Inside this are individual see-through plastic re-sealable containers (not like the usual foil containers with white card lids!). They are just like tuppaware, only thinner plastic. In these, the food is kept very well insulated. Your main course will still be hot even after delivery, and after you've spent 15 minutes eating duck pancakes! What more can I say, except it's a great shame that the restaurant closed. The only other thing that you need now is the phone number, which is 020 8542 3504. Enjoy!

- 31/03/02 McChina sounds like a lovely Chinese restaurant, we could so with some of them around my way (here in Gants Hill). The one at the top of my road is horrible, infact I'm suprised it hasn't been mentioned on one of those programmes like 'Britain's worst restaurants'! |
