Advantages: Cheap, reliable

Disadvantages: Fat-heavy

McDonalds is a known quantity - you can be just about anywhere in the world and once you spot the Golden Arches you can be sure that what you order will taste the same as it would in your home town, or in New York City, or in Moscow, or ... you get the picture. This is both a blessing and a curse. Guaranteed tasty junk food is great, but if you're globetrotting then a familiar taste could easily be ignored in favour of something local, surely?

The McDonalds menu has a breakfast and a lunch option. Breakfast staples include the McMuffin, an English muffin containing egg, processed cheese and either bacon or sausage. Lunchtime things are more traditional: burgers of beef, chicken or fish, fries, buckets of various soft drinks and a vegetarian option that's an afterthought if ever there was one - sweetcorn and peas held together with sawdusty mush.

The tray cover that comes underneath your order has all the nutritional information on what you're eating on it, and it tends to make for depressing reading. If you order carefully, you can get more than your full day's recommended calorie and fat allowance in one meal - and some of their salads are as fat-heavy as the burgers.

McDonalds is great as emergency food when you need something fast, cheap and reliable. It's also incredibly fat-heavy and should probably be an occasional indulgence rather than a habit.

Summary: Famous chain clogs arteries everywhere
