Advantages: They are cheap and fast
Disadvantages: Everything else
Over the past few years we have seen the seemingly unstoppable spread of American culture radiating throughout the countries of the world and none more so than right here in the united kingdom.
Fast food, honed and perfected by our transatlantic cousins is everywhere nowadays, with 'Maccy D's' being perhaps the most prolific and well known.
Mcdonalds has quite a long history (longer than i expected) with the precursor to the fast food behemoth being a single 'mcdonalds bbq restaurant'. That was in 1940 but today there are countless Mcdonalds
"Restaurants", Drive thru's and Kiosks dotted throughout the entirety of this little blue & green dot we call home.
Now, im no fool (dont say anything those who know me ; P) I am well aware that a company can only get so big through popularity and success, its the basis of our entire economy-supply and demand- so there is clearly a lot of you out there who are gonna disagree whole heartedly with me on this one. But i really cant stand Fast food in general especially Mcdonalds, for me it is the epitamy of a huge heartless corporation with a flashy white toothed smile.
With issues such as the destruction of rainforest to build pastures for grazing cattle and a rise in obesity in kids, long being swept under the carpet.
Now Mcdonalds are being seen to be addressing the latter by reducing fat and salt levels and including carrot sticks in happy meals. And a string of misleading adverts filmed in fields to give the impression that Mcdonalds is a healthy and morally good company. As if we the public are a bunch of braindead morons who are incapable of independant thought. Im not calling anyone who likes Mcdonalds a moron, i used to love their chips and nuggets. Im just saying that even the people who are ardent supporters of Mcdonalds dont go there because of its superior healthy products and no amount of nature inspired adverts are going to coerce us into believing otherwise.
For example, the mcdonald ceasar salad is covered in dressing that rivals a big mac in the amount of sugar and calories it conatains.
I kno that Mcdonalds have had to change to survive, and there is a part of me that understands this fact, they are a company so of course money is going to be the be all and end all for them. Perhaps i am too cynical these days but everytime i see a Mcdonalds advert i cant stop thinking of them as a manipulative, heartless company that will tell us whatever they think we want to hear in order to stuff us through their doors.
I dont mean to sound preachy (altho having said that im well aware that i probably do) its just i have strong emotions about this subject.
As a quick place to grab breakfast before work, or the occasional treat for the kids i can well understand, but as a company,i find them morally reprehensible and im not really lovin it at all.
(sorry for the rant thanks for reading)
Summary: Im far from an eco warrior but Maccy d's cross a line for me
