A group of 11 went for a birthday celebration. Several members of the party had visited previously and had good experiences, although one had been warned by her sister not to have high expectations. The evening started well: our orders were taken promptly and it wasn't long before the starters arrived. Then it went downhill fast. Here are the negatives: The sharing plate of nachos was crumbled as though it was the dregs of a packet; we complained and got a small plate as a freebie extra. It took over an hour after the starters for the mains to be served. (It could have been worse; we reckoned the party on the adjoining table waited nearly two hours from arrival to mains.) Empty glasses piled up on the table, although we did at least manage to get the starter plates cleared by handing them to the waiter while he was trying to do something else. The waiter spilled some kind of creamy or cheesy sauce over a couple of people. Drinks orders got forgotten or missed. (In the waiter's defence it was quite noisy so maybe he just didn't hear us.) They ran out of Jack Daniels. My fajitas didn't sizzle, the meat (plenty of it, I must admit) was erratically cut and cooked: some chunks medium-rare, some strips medium-well; and only four tortillas. The accompaniments were plentiful but unexciting. Fajitas delivered to the adjoining table did sizzle - over my neighbour. They brought out the same order twice. When the bill eventually arrived it was itemised in a way that made it very difficult to check its accuracy or work out who should be paying how much as we split the bill. There were positives. Some of the food was reported to be very tasty and they brought us a round of complimentary drinks to compensate for something, presumably the delays even though they'd initially said it was because we arrived late. (No more than 10 minutes, probably more like five, for the last few members of the party; some of us were early.) Usually when we have a bad meal out it's apparent from events whether it's the kitchen or the front of house that's fallen short. In this case it was just so chaotic that we couldn't tell what was going wrong. If this had been something other than a celebration more than one of us would have walked out and gone somewhere else. As it was, by skipping desserts and not leaving a tip (which would have been wholly undeserved) we had a few quid extra to spend somewhere that our custom would be appreciated. I'm very unlikely to go back.
Last night we went to Mexxa Mexxa to celebrate my sisters 21st birthday. We arrived at 7:15 for or 7:20 booking and we were sat straight away. The staff were nice and friendly but didnt come and ask us how everything was much (a few times though). There was a large group of us about 15 or so, but, i feel that the service took to long in regards of when we ordered and when our food finally arrived, around 45-50 minutes later. I ordered a prawn cocktail starter and in my opionion there was not enough prawns for the price £5.25 the thousand island dressing was usual which was a bit of a shame as I was hoping for some mexican spice in it or something. for main I chose a bbq chicken fajita which was nice but a little bland (it should of had more of a bbq flavour), but there was a fair amount of it which always help in my eyes, there was 4 tortillas, lots of chicken, cheese, nachos and lots of dips. Yet again though the price was high £12.95. For dessert I had a banana split which i had one problem with, the menu stated it came with ice cream but it came with 3 different flavours which was a shame as it didnt mix too well. The split cost £4.65 The parking is good for the place as a huge car park is about two minutes walk away (the fremlin walk its called) A nice place but nothing too special and a bit expensive in my opionion. Tony
My girlfriend and I went along to Mexxa Mexxa on the recommendation of friends who had told us that the rack of ribs was huge and delicious...which I have to say sounded extremely tempting (even as I type this, the thought of a nice bbq rack of ribs has got my mouth watering!). We had not really planned to go, it was one of those spontaneous evenings that happen from time to time. I just suggested we go out and we ended up at Mexxa Mexxa as there were a few tables free and we both remembered the promise of the yummy ribs. We went in and were seated at a small table towards the back of the restaurant. The restaurant is not the biggest of places but it quite nice inside and has been decorated in a nice lively mexican type, nice and bright and lively and salsa-esque. Our order was taken quite quickly, along with our drinks order. The drinks took quite a while to arrive despite there being plenty of staff for the number of customers. Having been a waiter when I was younger, in a rather more upmarket and far busier restaurant than your standard chain restaurant, I know what it is like to be a waieter and also know what it is to be really really busy and having to be rushed off your feet for an entire service and still provide good service...this was not the case at Mexxa Mexxa. As I have said, our drinks order, a simple beer and a lemondade, took too long to arrive and as for our starter... To start we had ordered a dish of garlic mushrooms to share, these took about 25 minutes to appear and when they did it really was nothing special tht required more than a few moments to preoare, certainly nothing to justify such a wait when the restaurant was as quiet as it was! To eat, the mushrooms were very nice, they had been pan sauted in garlic and butter and a few herbs, and were very tasty. Once we had finished the mushrooms, we waited for what seemed an age for ourt dish to be cleared and then even longer for the main course to arrive. In the mean time we asked for a jug of iced water and 2 glasses. We had both ordered the BBQ rack of ribs which came with chips, and form our friends description, were expecting a huge rack of juicy ribs and a great big pile of chips. What we actually got (eventually - this took a lot lot longer than it should have done to come) was a fairly good sized rack and an ok portion of chips, nothing to write home about really. The BBQ sauce was very tasty and the meat ont he ribs was tender, though I have to add that this was not one of the best racks of robs I've ever had, there was not a huge amount of meat on them which was disappointing. The chips were your standard pre-prepared from frozen one which you get in most places. Overall I would say this was an average dish that you could find in any number of 'budget' eateries, not worth going out of your way for. Overall I would say our experience of the Maidstone Mexxa Mexxa was distinctly average, the food was fairly tasty but nothing really special and not of a standard that would make me keen to recommend them. The restaurant itself had quite a nice feel about it with the bright lively decor and some nice salsay music playing at just about the right volume. The service was not even close to being up to the standard I would expect from even the most average of chain restaurants, the food took ages to come out, our table took ages to be cleared and as for our jug of iced water and two glasses....even after remind two different waiters....it never arrived!!!
TERRIBLE!! booked a table for 2. we were seated and we were left HALF AN HOUR before drinks were even ordered. Waitresses who cleanded tables or even sat new tables saw us sitting and waiting. Out of protest i refused to ask them for a menu or drinks...After waiting for half hour i walked out (with a huff) ...absolutely shocking...and this was the second time we'd been LEFT! we wont be revisiting. Too many unorganised staff for my liking. Even the chef appeared in the restaurant with an angry look on his face. Its a shame really but just goes to show teenagers cant hold down the fort of a busting business like Mexxa Mexxa. Get some management!!
Appalling meal and service. Food was clearly microwaved (nachos came with crispy cheese). Portions were measly and the waitress paid no attention to requests. We had to order side dishes to make up for the tiny portions. Nothing came out at the same time so half the table had eaten by the time the rest of the food came out. Only good bit was the alcohol and the waitress clearly couldn't work out her maths as we were undercharged. Do not bother going unless there is absolutely nowhere else to go.
You may be asking yourself why I choose o call a review on a Mexican restaurant 'Nice Burgers'? Well, it's simple...I don't like mexican food, but my fiance loves it. I first went to Mexxa Mexxa two years back for my fiance's work Christmas do, I was not really keen on the idea, but didn't want to miss out. He told me not to worry about not liking mexican, as they have some English dishes. I was quite impressed to find out that most of these dishes are burgers..... And I do like burgers. Since the first time we've been back a few times, and I will admit to being very boring, ordering the same each time. We tend to have 'El Combo' to share to start, which is a platter of chicken goujons, baby corn, breaded mushrooms, tortilla chips, parsnip chips breaded jalapenos, onion rings and mozzarella cheese sticks (I think that's everything!) with different dips. This is yummy, I like it because I can have just the things I like and the other half has the rest!!! Then I have cheeseburger and chips.... you may think this is boring, but their burgers are yummy!!! They are huge, and are served with a pile of chips, onion rings, and loads of salad. I don't think I have ever finished everything served up (although I do tend to leave more salad than anything else!!). We have only made it to dessert once, and then we had a sundae for two to share, between four of us! It was lovely, but I can't remember what was in it... lots of chocolate and stuff. Mexxa Mexxa is a great place to have a dinner for two, as it's candlelit tables and low lighting sets the mood very nicely. It is also a nice place to go if there are more of you. It is a very relaxing atmosphere, and it serves a good amount of great food at a reasonable price. Best of all, you don't have to like mexican food to go there!!! But it's not very good if you are on a diet!!!! Three and a half years on, I'd like to add to my review. We still eat at Mexxa Mexxa when we get chance, however, I now have the chicken fajitas every time. They are absolutely fantastic. You can order fajitas for 1 or for 2 to share and both portion sizes are very generous. The flour tortillas come out in covered dishes and the chicken comes on a sizzling platter with red and green peppers and onions. You then get plate of accompaniments containing lettuce, grated cheese, jalapenos, refried beans, guacamole, salsa and sour cream. The tricky bit is that you then have to construct your own fajita without it going everywhere when you bite into it! The great thing about it is that you can put what you want in it, but also if there's something you haven't tried but want to, you can. I've recommended these to a few friends and everybody has come back to me saying how fantastic they are, but that they couldn't manage dessert afterwards!!
This is the best mexican restaurant I've ever been to (Out of quite a few) and I guess that explains why I frequently return. Mexxa Mexxa is a small chain of 3 kent-based mexican restaurants that have only been around for a few years. They have restaurants in Gravesend (Which only opened late last year) and West Malling as well as Maidstone. Mexxa Mexxa offers an excellent atmosphere and menu. The lighting is intimate and welcoming with candles in wine bottles on every table and dimmed lighting, and the tables and chairs that fit in with the mexican theme. Apart from the occasional long seat against a wall which is covered in zebra-patterned material! The staff are helpful and friendly, although sadly none of them wear sombreros...... The choice of food is very good, and the food itself is excellent. There is a wide variety of starters and main courses, and a good selection of desserts, although most are ice-cream based. They offer traditional dishes such as Nachos, Fajitas, Chilli con Carne, Burgers, Salads and Burritos, whilst also offering more unusual dishes such as Quesadillas (A 'sandwich' of flour tortillas and cheese, topped with chilli and sour cream - delicious!) mixed starter pletter (Baby sweetcorn, stuffed jalapenos, mushrooms, fried parsnips, and more besides) and Jalapeno Jelly (A side dish). I have to admit that I nearly always have the fajitas or the quesadillas, as they are so good. The choice of beers is also very good, they have traditional spanish/mexican beers such as Sol, Dos Equis, San Miguel, etc. available as well as Stella Artois, Becks and Red Stripe. The beers are all served in bottles, unfortunately no draught beers are available. As stated earlier the desserts are nearly all ice-cream based (Except the Mexican Waffles!) and include sorbets and sundaes as well as the obligatory huge dessert that you earn a certificate for finishing. The food is plentiful and very filling. The cost is very reasonable, a friend of mine and 2 friends recently had a main course each and a couple of beers for £39 in total. On the other hand, 3 friends and I recently had a bill for £110 to split between us. However this is very reasonable when you consider that we had a starter, main course, side dish and a dessert each, plus 4 rounds of beers (We were hungry and thirsty!!!). So I think the price is very good. As I said earlier I visit this restaurant a lot and find it suitable for all occasions. Whether enjoying a meal and a few beers with some friends, having a nice meal with my fiancee, or even having a Christmas meal for nearly 30 people, Mexxa Mexxa is superb. If you enjoy mexican food, or if you want to try something new, or even if you're just looking for a good place for a meal, I heartily recommend Mexxa Mexxa.
