Advantages: Close to city with great cakes and grand selection of teas
Disadvantages: Not sure there is disabled access
Miss Cranstons tearoom is a lovely little place where despite my age, friends and I quite often come to cure our hangovers or rest weary shopping feet with a nice cup of tea and indulge in some cakes. Miss Cranston has been running tearooms since 1886 (clearly she is no longer with us) and now Bradford the Bakers have taken over the place and registered her name as a trademark (in fact she was the person behind The Willow Tearooms which are still open).
The teashop is located about two minutes walk from Central Station and is on Gordon Street, (just for any locals that are familiar with the area!) The teashop is located on the upper floor and decorated in neutral shades with pristine table cloths and little vases of flowers. Very quaint! The tearoom is well equipped with tables, almost to the extent of being cluttered but come Saturday afternoon in this place you would soon see why. Expect a good 15 minute wait for a table but when you are seated you will not be hurried which adds to the relaxed and genial atmosphere of the place.
On all the occasions I have been the staff have been very friendly and efficient although on a Saturday when its heaving they can be forgetful. There is a grand selection of teas for you to chose from all of which are served with leaves which you have to sieve whilst pouring. Earl grey is my established favourite and you are looking at around £1.60 for a pot of tea, one cup and a pot of hot water to keep you going.
The tearoom serves breakfasts and lunches which if Im honest are pretty average fare, homemade soups, jacket potatoes and sandwiches but you do get specials like haggis and the salmon with scrambled eggs is delicious. Lunch will cost £5 a little more for the specials but the strength of this tearoom is on its tea and its cakes!
The cream teas are pretty magnificent with a three-tiered selection of tuna and cucumber sandwiches, scones with fresh jam and clotted cream and a selection of pancakes and assorted cakes. True decadence but guaranteed to expand that waistline! Thankfully what you don't eat they are happy to doggy bag up for you. It will set you back £14 but easily enough for 2.
The cakes are all freshly baked and range in price from £1.50 - £3.00. I cannot pretend to have tried them all as I am a gluten for fruit tarts and have one every time I go, my friends are great fans of the éclairs so I guess they come highly recommended!
I love how traditional and old fashioned this little place is, china cups and silver platters for the afternoon tea are a nice touch and personally having my tea infused with leaves instead of a bag never ceases to be entertaining. I do not recall ever seeing disabled access and the staircase to the tearoom is reasonably narrow but all in all it is a lovely little haven if your out and about and want a rest or a cheeky cake.
Summary: If your in Glasgow this well stocked and delicious tearoom is worth a visit
