Advantages: Tasty, cooked to order, not too pricey, nice decor for a chip shop!
Disadvantages: It's all the way in York!
Mr Chippy is (you've guessed it!) a fish & chip shop on Swinegate in York City Centre. It is just a few short streets away from the famous York Minster.
Stepping inside the restaurant side of the business (the take-away chip shop is next door) I noticed it looked a bit more up-market than your average chippy... Not really posh, but unusually nice for a chip shop.
The walls are white and are decorated with large brown canvas artworks (all pretty much the same). The chairs and tables were wooden (and comfortable) and laid with cutlery and salt & vinegar.
We were shown to a table, although you could happily choose to sit at any vacant table. The restaurant was half full when we went in. We were then handed the menus... There were two - the usual one with the fish & chips etc and one with a selection of salads.
Both Mum & I chose cod & chips (regular size) with a bottle of Peartiser each. It came to a total of £16.90, which I thought was well worth it, even though that is a little more that what I'd normally pay for 2 rounds of fish & chips with drinks.
The menu also included haddock and plaice, so there was a choice of what fish you fancied. A fish dinner was also on the menu and it included fish & chips, peas, bread & butter and a pot of tea or coffee - this was around the £8 mark. There was also a discount for pensioners, which I thought was nice. Fish cake, sausage, burgers in a bun etc were also available as were side orders. The bottom of the menu also had a selection for children.
Drinks-wise there was plenty to choose from - tea, coffee, Coke, Sprite, Appletiser, Peartiser, juice etc.
The meal was freshly cooked to order, but didn't take too long to arrive. Our drinks were served while we were waiting for the food. The waitress also asked if we required any sauces - we did, tartar of course - and a small bowl was brought out prompty.
I knew just by looking at my fish & chips that they were going to be tasty and they were! They were delicious! I made every effort to clear my plate, but was struggling towards the end. A regular size was definitely big enough. There's no way I'd have finished a large one!
Shortly after we'd finished our food the waitress cleared the table for us before bringing the bill. The bill was brought on a tray, which I normally hate because it always feels like people are expecting a tip, but this time I didn't mind... The food was delicious and the tray also contained a business card and 2 caramelised biscuits in wrappers - which I thought were a nice touch and tasted nice too!).
We paid and I left the change as a tip, but it was only 10p... Generous, aren't I?!
Still, I would definitely go to Mr Chippy again should I fancy fish & chips which visiting York. The food was great, the staff were friendly and the cutlery was clean (something I always take note of!).
Their business card states that they are award winning and I can certainly believe that and their motto "We believe that good enough isn't".
So if you're in York, I can certainly recommend Mr Chippy for tasty fish & chips!
Summary: A great fish & chip restaurant!
