Advantages: Above average places
Disadvantages: Check that they are open.
Notorious Shepherd's Market can be viewed from AL HAMRA, 31 Shepherd's Market. You may spot some arms dealer and his young friend. AL HAMRA specialises in such delights as hummus topped with diced lamb (large portion!), and toasted pine-nuts and falafel. There is unlimited salad and bread (cover charge!).Wash all this down with Lebanese wine. Tasty food and you can sit outside in summer. Lovers of Scottish food will enjoy BUCHANS, 62 Battersea Bridge Road, SW11. The place looks Scottish without overdoing it. Try the Haggis with neeps and tatties, Loch Fyne oysters, and the Roquefort and whisky mousse. My favourite place to eat while in London is the restaurant at the BRITISH MUSEUM. Help yourself to top class food and wine at reasonable prices. Very fresh salads, gutsy main courses such as lamb or salmon, and delicious puddings. Wonderful Italian cooking is found at L'ALTRO, 210 Kensington Park Road, W11. The place is decorated like an Italian palazzo. There is an air of dolce far niente or something. Banquet on marinated aubergine with zucchini, peppers with mozzarella, and tender rack of lamb. For South East Asian cuisine, try either MELATI, 21 Great Windmill Street, W1, or CITY SINGAPURA, 78 Leadenhall St, EC3. Melati has very simple decor, but the nasi goreng and mie goreng seem authentic. Busy City Singapura has spicy Indonesian satay and succulent breast of chicken and bamboo shoots cooked in lemon grass, turmeric and coconut cream. For British food in a room with oak panelling and framed prints, go to RULES, 35 Maiden Lane, WC2. This is the place for a salad of bacon and black pudding with poached egg, game, and bread and butter pudding. If you are in beautiful Richmond, visit MA GOA, 244 Upper Richmond Road, SW5. This will conjure up a picture of the relaxing East: wooden floor and photos of Goa. The food is spicy and comes with rice and very fresh vegetables. An alternative Indian place i
s SABRAS, 263 High Road, NW10, which does vegetarian food in a simple cafe atmosphere. Lots of marrow, cucumber, chick peas, dal... If you like posh mirrors and fabrics, then trot along to WALTON'S, 11 Walton St, SW3. The fancy decor is the main attraction. Indulge yourself with broccoli mousse, salmon fish cakes or calf's liver with bacon. If you want something decadent and exotic (a muscular waitress with a deep voice?) try WILDE ABOUT OSCAR, 30 Philbeach Gardens, SW5. The food and service are perfect. Well cooked French/Italian food and wine. Try rack of lamb or the pasta.
