Advantages: Good Food
Disadvantages: Not one in SToke, All chicken
Unfortunately there isn't a Nando's in Stoke on Trent or I would be there every week to endulge in their chicken, however I was introduced to Nando's at the start of the year and I must admit that I have been there once a month this year to various restaurants across the country including Derby, Manchester, Birmingham, Southport, Sheffield and Brighton.
Nando's Piri Piri Chicken comes from Portugal and dates back centuries when the Portuguese went to explore new worlds and to discover new sea routes to different lands. The Portuguese entered Africa, Mozambique in particular and began to settle there.
Meeting with the Africans, they were introduced to the African Birds Eye Chilli. Whether this particular chilli was indigenous to Africa was not known and the Africans called it Pili PIli which in Engliash is translated to Pepper Pepper. Having used the Pili Pili in daily cooking and calling it in their languagae Peri Peri, that is where the spice of Nando's comes from.
Nando's restaurants are all across the country with new franchises being opened regularly (I hope they open one in SToke. They all follow the unique theme and are quite continental inside. All restaurant are themed with writing across the walls telling their guests the history behind the Portuguese Peri Peri Chicken and have various picture sof cockerels all around.
Upon entering a Nando's restaurant, I believe all staff are trained the same as you would imagine, as every one I have been too, we have been through the same procedure. Is you have to wait for a table they alway have a nice little waiting area or most of the do anyway. As they seat you at your table you have your various condiments on the table and each table has a number on it in ther shape a cockerel. All menu's are also on the table.
The restaurants aren't completely waiter / ess served. Once decided on what you want to eat you have to order the food from the counter and they cook it to order for you which in every restaurant you can see them do this on the grills.
The menu mainly comprises of various forms of chicken - chicken wings, half chiecken, full chicken, chicken burger which are all cooked in the famous Peri Peri sauce which you can have as mild, medium, hot or extra hot and you have got to be extra aring to have extra hot as it does take you lips off and isn't quite as enjoyable. I would recommend medium to enjoy it without any pain.
The meals normally come with deals and Nando's offers what are called Side Lines and you can have a meal with one side line or two. Side Lines consist of Chips, Garlic Bread, Rice or Coleslaw. Normally opting for Garlic bread which comes on a rolll, the bread is smothered with garlic butter not too much and is extremely tasty. I also normaly have Coleslaw, which is the best tasting Coleslaw I have ever had, shreeded cabbage, carrott, with a tiny bit of Nando's own Mayonnaise which is Peri peri tasting.
Drink options - I have only had soft drinks here but they offer a bottomless glass of soft drinks and have a ice machine at every restaurant that you help yourself too.
Some restaurant's also offer a take away service that you can ring up and order over the phone, however this service is collection only.
All Nando' chicken is flame grilled and they have their own sauces that you can use to complement your meal, these can also be purchased from places like Tesco, in which if you want to try it yourself you can marinade your own chicken to your own desires.
Overall, its not to everyones liking but I love it. If you haven't tried already, its worth it, but take my advice, don't go in thinking you are all matcho and go for extra hot as they will take your lips off and that nice machine will come in more than handy.
