Advantages: complete freedom in how your meal is
Disadvantages: can be expensive, very chicken focussed
Nandos is a Portugese inspired restaurant, although they are mainly big in South Africa. Their popularity is gradually growing over here, and they do offer a refreshing change to other cuisine thats available in the UK.
Nandos mainly focus on chicken dishes, although they do have some vegetarian options as well, and each meal is very much a creation of your own.
When you go to the restaurant, you are shown a table and given a menu, you then go up to the counter to pay and collect drinks, and your order is brought over when its ready.
From the menu you first pick what chicken, or vege option, you are going to have. There is a choice of 1/4, 1/2 or whole chickens, chicken wings, and various burgers. You then choose the basting for your food. All chicken is marinated in some baste, but you can pick lime and herb, which is mild, medium, hot or extra hot to cover your chicken when it's cooked. I normally find medium plenty hot enough!
Then it's time to pick your sides. Each main typically comes with 1 or 2 sides, or a super side, although you can have the main on its own. The pricing is all laid out on the menu. From the sides you can choose garlic bread, corn on the cob, coleslaw, chips, and rice, and super sides have house salad, cheesy mash. This freedom is excellent for people like me who don't eat chips, and normally can't order burgers out without being awkward.
Each order is cooked fresh, so there is normally about a ten minute wait for your food, but can be longer depending on how busy the restaurant is, and what you order.
The prices vary from around £3- £11 for a main, with sides being about £1.80 each. When I went I paid £17 for two people to eat, and refillable drinks, and we were very full at the end.
Summary: good for chicken lovers, who want the freedom to design their meal exactly how they want it.
