Advantages: Fast Food with a touch of class, good atmosphere, good food, good value
Disadvantages: Not for those who want to be waited on without having to move
Nando's is a nationwide chain of restaurants, it was created in South Africa in the 1980's and now has 213 chain restaurants in the UK, it is seen as the acceptable face of fried chicken restaurants. The food is based around Portuguese cuisine apparently with the famous Nando's Peri Peri sauce being a mainstay of the menu.
When you arrive a host will take you to the first available table, you are then given menus and you take your table number and your order up to a main ordering desk, here you order your food and pay for it prior to your meal.
Most dishes are chicken based and when ordering your food you have to choose how hotly you want the chicken spiced, choosing from the following options:
Lemon & Herb: Lightly seasoned for people who don't like it too spicy
Medium: Spicy but won't blow your head off
Hot: Ok this one could blow your head off if your not a spice lover
Extra Hot: Now we're talking
The food options are fairly basic, you can have chicken legs, wings a chicken burger, a bean burger, or chicken platters to share, you can order on their own or with side dishes such as chips, spicy rice, corn on the cob or coleslaw.
Drinks are good value with bottomless soft drinks costing £20. We went to the venue in London Bridge and it looked good, lovely woody finishing to the furniture and nice open bricked walls, the paintings on the walls were interesting and the Mezzanine floor added a nice touch, the place looked really good and was a nice contrast to some of the overpriced underfilled sandwiches at the nearby Borough Market, unlike most restaurants, waiting staff do their job without trying to impress as you have already paid, so service is fast and without fuss. But you can still leave a tip if you wish to.
We had two meals for £20 including a bean burger, half a chicken, chips, rice, corn and coleslaw, plus bottomless soft drinks. We left a tip as we had a nice experience, without waiting for bills. The place had a laid back air, people were having fun, or enjoying their lunches and the food was good, my bean burger was very tasty with a hint of spice and filled me up for the day.
Overall, its a friendly venue that matches a corporate style with just a little more comfort and decent food than perhaps McDonalds, people were having fun, staff were amiable and very helpful and the food was good value, filling and tasted pretty good. We got a little card which is stamped on visits too and apparently if we visit a few more times we'll get some free food on a future visit which I thought was a nice touch too.
Summary: I'm just going out for a Portuguese with the lads, love!

- 04/10/09 I still haven't tried Nandos. Must try it. The food sounds like my kind of fare. |
