Description: Restaurant chain specialising in chicken dishes from Portugal. Includes recipes, locations, and online shopping.

I had my first Nandos the other day! We went to the one in The Gate, in Newcastle. For some reason, I have never got round to going to Nandos, even though I liked the sound of it, so when we passed, we went in and had lunch.

Nandos is basically a chicken restaurant, where you order the chicken in various heat and spice levels according to taste. The range goes from really hot to mild and there are accompanying peri peri sauces which again range from mild to hot. You can also order side dishes such as fries, mashed potato, salad, corn on the cob etc, along with drinks (refillable, or bottomless) and then desserts. You can select quarter, half or whole chickens depending on how many are eating are or how hungry you are and vegetarian and halal options were available.

We ordered a deal for just under £17 which was a whole chicken, a small sweet potato mash and 2 corn on the cobs, and then paid around £2.50 each for refillable drinks.

The restaurant was nice and airy with big high ceilings and split level seating areas. The music was cheerful and the food arrived within about 10 minutes. I was really impressed with the food, it was great, the chicken was delicious, really tender and spicy without being too hot (so we were brave and added some hot peri peri!) and the sweetcorn was cooked perfectly. Really recommend the sweet potato mash too, it was so good, really creamy (and not nearly as bad for you as normal mashed potato!) and the perfect side dish to have with spicy chicken.

I am now a huge Nando's fan and can't wait to go back - it was really fresh and tasty and because they baste their chicken in spices for 24 hours, you can really taste the difference. I am really looking forward to trying some of the other things on the menu!

The menu also seems healthier than other alternatives in the same price range, pizza or KFC is not in the same league as Nandos, it is so much nicer. Definitely recommend that you try this place, and don't wait as long as I did!
