Advantages: Chicken cooked like nowhere else
Disadvantages: Very busy, long wait to get seated but may have been a one off
I visited Nando's for the first time yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. The thought of a restaurant that does just chicken was, I thought, a bit odd and would be slightly boring, but I was totally wrong.
We (my partner and I) visted the Metro Centre location, at about 8.30pm. The place was heaving to say the least, there was a queue to sit and wait for a table, then there was a further queue in the restaurant to place your order. I still wasn't convinced that this was going to be a pleasant experience. We were given a menu each while we waited. I wanted to order a drink to wait with since we were told it would be about 15-20 minutes before we got seated, but this wasn't possible.
On reading the menu, the basic jist of things are, you order your chicken (whether it's a quarter, half or whole)which has been marinated for 24 hours in a peri-peri sauce, then you choose how you would like it further seasoned. The choice was great, you could have it plain (but would still have a slight spice to it due to being marinated) medium, hot or extra hot. There is also a choice of lemon and herb or mango and lime which looked very tasty.
After about 15 minutes we were shown to our seat and given a number. You then join the queue to the till area to place your order. You give the table number and your order and make your payment which is a great idea as you are not left waiting after your meal to catch the attention of your server for the bill, therefore can leave when you are ready.
We opted for a platter to share, which consisted of a whole chicken, 2 large sides. The sides are listed on the menu, and there is a great choice including fries seasoned with peri peri salt (which we chose they were yum), garlic bread, spicy rice, coleslaw, corn on the cob, creamy mash and some type of pea dish. We also chose the garlic bread which was nice and soft with just the right amount of garlic.
There is also a station with the drinks machine, for bottomless soft drinks and ice, and also any condiments such as peri-peri sauce, garlic type sauces and other dressings, along with serviettes and cutlery.
The food was delivered quite quickly since being really busy, so I was quite impressed. The food did not disappoint either. You could taste that the chicken was flame grilled and even though we ordered a whole chicken it did not look intimidating as it came portioned. We ordered it medium but it did not seem too spicy, so I may try hot the next time.
The only down side I found was that the kitchen did not look very clean, but may be due to being so busy, there seemed to be a lot of food 'lying' around, tubs of marg with knives in, salad stuff, and the floor looked dirty. But like I said earlier, it was really busy, so may be a one off.
Before you visit you can check out the menu on line to give you an idea of what to expect.
I would definately return, just not when it is so busy. Great food, decent service, reasonable price.
Summary: A nice change from other chains
