Nando's is a Portuguese style restaurant that focuses around chicken. As with other fast food/ sit down dining restaurants around, it has a bit of a personality clash. You order at the till, collect your own drinks and entrees such as olives and nuts but then your food is bought to your table by members of staff.
I have visited many Nando's up and down the country as these days they seem to be popping up all over the place as the Nando's boom takes hold. All the restaurants I have seen boast a fine selection of modern or African art and littered with attractive leafy plants and urns. I find the atmosphere in Nando's relaxing and inviting. The branch I visit most often is the Leeds Briggate branch; although there are two other Nando's restaurants in Leeds centre alone.
During busy times, it is sometimes necessary to wait for a table. At the Leeds store, this can get slightly tricky as there is no seating area to wait in. You sort of just hang around the door, which is a little off putting. However, the whole restaurant is geared to turn and burn, you never have to wait too long for a table.
All Nando's restaurants are child friendly and have a reasonably priced children's menu.
To order you need to remember your table number and then head to the counter and try and remember what everyone wants to eat and drink! If all the guests on the table order separately then you run the risk of some food coming out first, whilst others wait for theirs. There is never a long period of delay though as the majority of menu is really fast to come out of the menu.
Once ordered, collect your napkins and cutlery from the help yourself stand.
There is a good range of non alcoholic drinks, wine and beers. The sodas are free refill and there is a station in the restaurant for you to fill your glass up. Sup as much as you can!
Peri-peri is pretty much the name of the game here but there a number of less spicy options. The majority of the menu comprises of chicken dishes; burgers, wraps, chicken on the bone (in various sizes) and pitas. There is also a range of vegetarian dishes that include a delicious veggie burger wrap with chilli jam. Once you have selected your main you can then choose your side dish. There are a number to choose from, such as chips, corn and rice. Each dish comes with a different level of spiciness that ranges from hot at the top of the scale, to the lowest, which is lemon and herb. I am a bit of a fence sitter and always go for medium; which is actually quite spicy! If your meal is not up to the required level of hotness, then you can drizzle it or swamp it in extra peri peri sauces that are located on the help yourself stand.
The food I ordered at the Leeds Briggate store arrived hot and on time. It was very tasty and this time, I tried some of the rugged peas to accompany my meal; they were delicious! I always order the ¼ of chicken as this is more than sufficient for one. I always ask for breast though as this guarantees a bigger piece than the leg section. The chicken is moist and the skin is crispy; perfect!
There are a number of desserts to choose from that are actually quite tasty. They also do refillable frozen yogurt and the flavour changes daily. I really like the strawberry frozen yogurt; less calories than ice cream but maximum flavour!
The service is polite and courteous and the staff are quick to clear tables after people have vacated. There is always a feeling that there is always something for the staff to do, they are truly focused on getting the tables ready for the next guests. Nando's thrives on the amount of guests they can get through the door, rather than on the average spend per head. In essence; they want you to eat and leave!

The cost of Nando's is steadily increasing over the years and now the average meal for two will cost around £22.00 including drinks. This used to be around £16.00 when I first started visiting the chain. Nevertheless, I really enjoy the food and it is the perfect solution for a pre cinema meal as it is quick and easy. I always use my Nando's loyalty card, this works on a stamp system; one for every time you visit. After the second stamp you get a free ¼ of chicken and then on the 6th you get a half free; up until you get a full chicken free. Oh that is a good day!
The standards of cleanliness are good, the toilets are fresh smelling and tidy and the staff are ever so polite. I would recommend Nando's; it is definitely worth a visit, even just to see what all the fuss is about.
Summary: A great restaurant that needs to remember it is still fast food; stop increasing the prices!
