The Newquay Meadery is a medieval themed restaurant located in Marcus Hill, which is just off Newquay's main shopping street. The building is distinctive, shaped like a castle with flag flying from the roof.

The main bar and restaurant is up a steep set of stairs, so buggys, wheelchairs- forget it which is a shame. The Meadery is essentially a restaurant but makes a point that your don't need to stay for food and customers are welcome to come in just to have drinks at the bar.

The inside of the restaurant is decorated like a medieval hall, complete with candles, suits of armour and swords on the walls. You can not fault the place for ambience. When I first sat down and had a good look around, I though it was the sort of place you'd want to bring everyone to see...

...this was before we had eaten. The menu, thankfully has no pigs heads and other strange medieval delicacies but stuck to crowd pleasers such as steak and chips and ribs. Unfortunately, it couldn't even do these very well.

I was served up a fatty rack of ribs, badly presented with little sauce and a side salad with no dressing. My friend was given a steak he wasn't over impressed with either. The drinks were a little more adventurous, with some cocktails with medieval names, fruit wines and honey mead in addition the usual lager wine and soft drinks. However, even the list was presented on a scruffy laminated piece of paper. It seemed that all the effort and imagination had been used up on the décor, that there was none left for the menu.

The staff were friendly enough, but again were dressed in black trousers and t shirts, not very in keeping with the theme.

Our bill, for two garlic breads, two main courses and three drinks came to just over £40. Not too bad for a meal out in a themed restaurant such as this, but far too overpriced for the quality of food we received.

Overall, a well decorated restaurant but let down by the food, maybe take their advice and go for a drink in the bar and soak up the atmosphere, but eat somewhere else.
