Patio is a fantastic Polish restaurant based in Shepherds Bush, it is within 3 minutes walk of tghe Shepherds Bush Tube Station.
It is open Monday to Friday from Midday until 3pm and in the evenings Monday to Saturday from 6pm to Midnight.
The restaurant serves traditional hearty Polish food and does it fantastically, the thing I like most about the place is that the owner will wander around offering you vodka with your courses as a matriarch would in Poland, this adds to the generally fun atmosphere and helps you really relax and enjoy your visit. There is a good selection of Polish beers including Zywiec and Okocim, there are also a wide variety of spirits, namely vodka!
The food is wonderful, with traditional Polish cuisine from herrings and Borscht (Beetroot Soup) for starters through Bigos (Hunters Stew) and Kielbasa (Sausages) in the main course, I have eaten all of these abroad and these dishes are comparable, the beetroot soup tastes as fine as wine, while the Bigos is hearty and absolutely filling.
There are a wide variety of dishes, which are mainly meat based and if your unsure of what the best things to eat are, ask any of the waiting staff and they will guide you in the right direction. Personally Kielbasa, Borscht and Poppyseed cake are my preferred three courses and beer and vodka tastes better with the food than bottles of wine (even though they are only around £9 a bottle).
A three course meal costs around £16.50 and that is fantastic value, the place doesn't look amazing but it has a great atmosphere rather than a great look. It looks very old fashioned and a bit untrendy, but its much more fun than the faceless image of many restaurants.
I really enjoy the visits, the food is great, the drinks and atmosphere are exceptional, my only problem is i'd love to go on a Saturday afternoon and the venue is never open!
Never tried Polish cooking? This is the place to start - especially as the set menu includes a vodka course... Patio is a gem of a place which is a brilliant antidote to all Conran-esque chrome and smoked glass venues. Here there's cosy wallpaper, a piano, and crockery that doesn't always match. It's great value for money - there's a three-course meal (check the price direct as it may change) with delicacies like blinis, salmon, little Polish dumplings and even a vegetarian choice. Beetroot and sour cream feature heavily, and the service is friendly. There's a choice of vodka to wash it down with - and it's very handy for Shepherd's Bush Tube - on the opposite side of the Green. You won't find another restaurant like this in London! PS - if you fancy a cocktail in a cooler location before dinner, try Vesbar just along the road - see separate review. Details: 5 Goldhawk Road W12 Tel: 020-8743 5194
