Advantages: Great atmosphere, big food portions
Disadvantages: Not good for a quiet meal
This review is for Pedro's, a Mexican restaurant in Norwich, and I thought I'd write it after having seen a bad review on this site, although it was from some years ago.
I visit this restaurant around one a year, and it has been a city for over two decades, situated in the middle of Chapelfield Gardens, which is near to the city centre and the library. It looks slightly out of place in the park, but not in a bad way.
The restaurant itself is not that big, but on all of the occasions that I've been , it has been very busy. We booked a table for around ten people on my last visit here, and they did well to fit us in, at the time that they said, but they did look quite stressed as some tables couldn't been turned around as quickly as they'd like.
The venue has been awarded five out of five stars by Norwich City Council, who check on the safety and quality of the food preparation areas, so everything looks good in this regard. The kitchen is partly open plan as well, so you can see what the chefs are getting up to!
The food is of course Mexican, but be warned as the main courses can be very large, and are really difficult to finish even if you do have a large appetite. Starters are slightly less good value, but if you're not that hungry, would probably nearly suffice for a main meal!
With regards to the staff, the woman that met us was slightly grumpy, but probably more through stress than not being well suited to the job. The waiter at the table was however very helpful and talkative, and helped to add to the atmosphere of the evening. There are also Mexican style hats which you can wear if you want more atmosphere!
My favourite main course are the chicken fajitas, which are served in a very generous sized serving. These are around twelve pounds, which is reasonable value. The quality is fairly good, although I've tasted better, so would give four out of five for the quality of the food. The rice that comes with the meal (unless you opt for something else) was vast in its quantity though, and you're unlikely to leave here hungry.
No-one in our group wanted dessert, as more than enough food had been served. However, there are a range of interesting desserts, including the colossus dessert, which is around a tenner and is designed for around four to six people. This is a vast dessert, and is great for sharing if some of the table want a dessert but others aren't so hungry.
Overall, an enjoyable night out is pretty much guaranteed here, and lots of people do keep going back. It's especially good for parties, so I wouldn't necessarily advise going here for a romantic meal, or for a quiet meal. Lots of atmosphere, reasonably priced food and a bright and fun environment. Will definitely be back!
Summary: Definitely worth a look if you want a fun restaurant for your party
