Pizza Express is Ok...I Guess
Member Name: mynameisrui
Advantages: Cheap, Good food
Disadvantages: Nothing different about it
I must say that I am undecided about Pizza Express. However, my girlfriend would live the if she could so therefore we very often visit the local Pizza Express.
As the name suggests, Pizza Express is pretty much your bog standard Italian eatery serving various pizza and pasta dishes. Price are fairly reasonable and food is good which means that they have a good turnover of customers.
There is a good variety of starters to choose from with my personal recommendation being the dough balls. There are numerous other dishes such as bruschetta, garlic bread and other such foods. Starters range from about £2 - £5 and portions are decent sizes.
As you would expect, the main dish on the menu is Pizza. There are plenty of different types of pizza's and they are all customisable which means you can take stuff off and add other stuff on if you so wish. However, if you do chop and change items, beware that they will change you for the new items but wont reduce your bill for getting rid of the old items. They have recently (I say recently but its probably been about a year now!) introduced a new type of pizza base called the "Romana" which is basically thin crust. The best way to imagine what it will look like is if you run a stream roller over a normal pizza which makes it much bigger but also thinner. I personally love the Romana pizza's. You can make any pizza a Romana but there is a charge of a couple of quid on top of the normal pizza price. Normal pizza's are around the £8 mark which, for what you get, is a very reasonable price.
They have recently decided to revamp their menu and unfortunately I find this to be a bad thing for the simple reason that they now only have four pasta dishes to choose from which basically means its pizza or nothing when you go there. There are also around the £8 mark.
In terms of food quality I have no complaints, I've never had any worries about whether the food is cooked or anything like that so that's a big plus point.
I find service to be varying however. In my local Pizza Express in Sutton, the staff seem to be quite slow at taking orders and bringing out food which can be a pain. I once had to wait 30 minutes before they took my drink orders and the restaurant wasn't even half full. However in another nearby restaurant the staff are perfect. Food is bought out fast and the staff are very attentive without being annoying.
Décor in the restaurants seems to be pretty standard. It is all kept fairly simple with low level lighting and low music. This works very well in creating a very good environment where you feel very comfortable.
So, if food is good, prices are good and service is ok then why am I undecided about it? Well I guess I find it quite hard to get excited over pizza. I also find that because they are so common, there is nothing particularly exciting about them as they are all the same thing.
I much prefer to try varying restaurants but, while my girlfriend wears the trousers in our relationship, we will more often than not end up there. Its not all that bad I guess, certainly better than Pizza Hut, or should it be Pasta Hut now?!
Summary: Not bad for a cheap dinner
