Advantages: cooked to order, very fresh, lots of offers
Disadvantages: less variety and choice than other chains
Pizza express always sell themselves as the traditional italian food chain, cooking good quality food fresh to order.
The first thing that you'll notice when looking at the menu is that the focus is purely on pizza. There are a few pasta dishes, and a couple of salads, but these do tend to be limited.
When you go into a restaurant, the pizza preparation place is normally on full view to the customers, which I like, as you can see the chefs shaping the dough. The pizzas are also cooked in proper pizza ovens, which makes a huge difference to the crust and base.
The pizzas that are offered are all thin base, and an average pizza is probably around 10inches. Generally you would need one pizza each. They also do Romana pizzas, which is the same amount of dough, but stretched even thinner, so the base is really crispy. These tend to be about £1.50 more expensive, but are worth it if you love very thin bases.
The available toppings tend to be very traditional italian, lots of olives, pepperoni, cotto ham, don't expect to see pineapple and sweetcorn, or the variety of topping that other pizza chains offer.
Pizza Express also do a good range of side orders, and I would strongly recommend you sample the dough balls- balled pizza dough baked and served with garlic butter.
The drinks are fairly expensive, the coke is served in the glass bottles not draught, and the main courses are priced at between £7-8 on average, although some are more. Fortunately vouchers are almost always available online for 2 for 1 on main courses, which cuts the cost hugely. Pizza Express also participate in the Orange Wednesday scheme for Orange customers, where you get 2 for 1 on mains, and a free garlic bread or dough balls.
Summary: a nice place to go if you fancy a more traditional pizza
