Disadvantages: Food average and overpriced
At the moment the restaurant chain Pizza hut (with almost 700 restaurants in the UK, and according to the website the largest Pizza restaurant chain in the world)began is running an advertising campaign on our TV screens to inform us that they have started to include more Toscani pasta dishes on their menu. The end shot of the advert is the familiar Pizza Hut logo with the word 'Pizza' changed to 'Pasta' hut. My husband is not particularly a Pizza lover, but he does enjoy a spag bol on occasion, so when we were held up in a queue of traffic on our way home after a hard day, and we saw the local Pizza Hut we decided to call in. We didn't want a fancy meal, just something to prevent us having to cook an evening meal when we got home.
When we got in, there were a few customers but it wasn't packed, but the young waitress looked flustered and stressed, and said she would be with us to help us find a seat in a moment. It was a long moment, but eventually she returned, apologised for keeping us waiting, and explained that there were only two waitresses on so they were very busy.
We looked at the menu, and my husband was disappointed to find that the new pasta dishes didn't include the good old faithful spaghetti bolognese. He settled upon Italian meatballs with tagliatelli and a tomato and herb sauce. I decided that I would stick with the pizza, and have an individual deep pan 'farmhouse' pizza. We both chose the adult soft drinks. The waitress returned promptly after leaving us to look at the menus for an acceptable time, but when she took our order we had a very long wait. It was about 30 minutes later that the food arrive, even though another two staff had turned up. My pizza looked fine, and tasted fine, although a small pizza seems to have a very large crust rim before the topping starts. The toppings were adequate, but couldn't have been called generous, and the tomato sauce on the pizza had a very strong flavour, which was rather overpowering for the rest of the toppings (cheese, ham and mushroom).
My husbands tagliatelli looked awful. It was served in a soup bowl sized dish, with a dollop of sauce and 5 meatballs sitting on the top. The pasta which had no sauce around the edges was dry and crispy, as if it had been reheated and in fact overheated in a microwave, rather than cooked fresh. My husband complained. the waitress assured him that they didn't possess a microwave oven, and offered to fetch the manager. He eventually arrived, and agreed that the pasta did not look appetising, and asked if my husband would like another serving. He agreed to this, and then waited the time it took for me to eat my whole pizza before they returned with another dish. The tagliatelli did look better this time, and there were 7 meatballs on this one, but when he finally got to eat it he was not impressed.
The tomato and herb sauce was watery, and tasted very much like branston's tomato and pepper relish, in fact we wondered if it was that watered down! The whole dish was the amount that you would expect to be served as a starter in a good italian restaurant, and as a main course for my husband who is 6ft 4 and has an appetite to match it was sadly lacking. He came home hungry.
When we were handed the bill, we were not impressed with that either, for one portion of pasta, an individual pizza and two glasses of pepsi they wanted £16.46. We went to pay the bill, and nothing was mentioned about reducing the cost, or offering us something in compensation for our meal not being up to standard, so I felt moved to say something to the waitress. She said she would have to speak to the manager so I asked her to do that. He said that he had been intending to reduce the cost, and took the whole cost of my husband's pasta from the bill. We were very grateful for this, although we weren't convinced anything would have been done if I hadn't protested.
In the past I have had good experiences at Pizza Hut, but this was not a good expereince and it will be a while before we will be attending again. I don't know if we just hit a bad time, or if it is always understaffed, but the whole atmosphere of the place was not pleasant. The salad bar looked messy, with some of the containers holding very little, and others with food everywhere, again just not appetising. I certainly wouldn't recommend a visit to Pizza Hut, based on our experience
Summary: If you like Pasta, don't choose Pizza hut
