Pizza Hut - Croydon (Just so you know!)
Member Name: izzoh
Advantages: Great food, no wait to be seated.
Disadvantages: Cold, service is standard, loud music.
I went to Pizza Hut last night with a friend for the first time in years! I went to the Croydon North End branch and would like to make that clear as you can not tar all Pizza Hut restaurants with same brush. Anyhow, this is what I thought...
** Pizza Hut **
Opening in 1958 in America, Pizza Hut are now the Grandparents of the pizza world. They were a tradition eat-in restaurant where you can sit down with a knife and fork (or you can just use your hands!) Now, they also offer a delivery service and in some restaurants a take-away service where you can buy a whole pizza or just a slice if you are in a hurry but have an empty tummy. That really is all there is to it. No fancy phrases, no cheesy moments (apart from on the pizza...) and just a basic company that has grown over the years to become a household name.
** Food **
So the name says it all really... Pizza hut... they sell pizza! But lately their new advertisement campaign has been about them selling pasta which I think is an interesting idea but I am a traditional kind of girl and when I went for my dinner last night I stuck to Pizza. When you eat out, of course it is brilliant to have a whole evening of niceties and everything should be to a top standard. However for me, if the food is to my liking then that really is what is most important, as that is what I am spending my money on. My friend and I were absolutely ravished after a whole day shopping and as Pizza Hut was the closest thing to us we dived in. I remember once upon a time the deals used to be pretty good, but last night the menu seemed to be lacking anything that made me go wow! So we firstly bought a starter which was The Favorites Platter it had 6 Texan barbecue chicken wings which were very well cooked and we were surprised we got six, but they were small! Tomato and mozzarella salad, which was basically one small slice of Mozzarella with one slice of tomato on top (there were two of these). The mozzarella looked nice on the plate but was a bit pointless as it does not have much taste. Potato wedges which were decent and crispy and last but not least a ciabatta loaf, which was really two pieces of garlic bread. It also said served with your choice of dip, but we were not given a choice and had a bowl of barbeque sauce. So it seems that that jazz up the menu to sound better then it is as what is on the plate does not meet what you expected. But, do not panic! Although presentation was lacking, the taste was perfect. To be honest, next time I will just get the chicken wings as they were very tasty but the rest of the platter was relatively bland. The main meal was a lot better. We chose the medium meat feast pizza on a thick base. (I told you we were hungry!) The pizza tasted delicious. It was warm and soft and literally melted in the mouth. There 6 slices so more then enough for me and my friend. The toppings (Spicy pork, ham slices, pepperoni and spicy beef) were well spread out on the pizza and did not overwhelm the cheese. Considering the meat feast pizza has toppings which are described as 'spicy' it did not make my mouth tingle at all. This for me was a slight disappointment as I like a little tingle on the taste-buds. But, for people who like their meat to have a bit taste but without the heat then this is a great option. I was quite taken aback at how nice the pizza was, I expected it to taste greasy and almost plastic like, but pleasantly it was none of these. A perk which I am fond of in restaurants is when the soft drinks such as Pepsi, Fanta etc are refillable. So once you have finished one glass, you can top up as much as you like. In saying this though, the drinks are £1.99 so you have to have at least two classes to break even... go on you can do it (and before you try, Pizza Hut do not allow you to share drinks... party poopers!) As you can imagine, after eating that much we skipped the dessert!
** Service **
Second on my list of important aspects of eating out is the service you are given. As I had not been to Pizza Hut for such a long time I was unsure of what to expect from the service and to be honest it was on the verge of being average. That is me being nice. The staff did not do anything wrong, or dissatisfactory but they just did not seem very bothered. Most of them looked like they did not want to be there which was probably down to them being so young and having to work on a Saturday night. When we first arrived we had a lot of bags from the shopping we had been doing all day and the restaurant was not that busy, there was a good few empty tables and was quite relieved to see we wouldn't have to wait to be seated. We were greeted straight away by a young guy who was not sure where to sit us. I said there were only two of us but as it was quiet could we have a booth so our bags would not get in the way. (If it was busy I would never have asked for a 4 seated table although I prefer them!) The waiter, to my surprise said NO! I almost felt like walking out. Instead he gave us a mumbled reason why which I did not bother to ask him to repeat and he led us to a 2 seated table in the corner. We managed to shove our bags in the corner behind us, but it would have made things so much easier if we had a booth. Anyhow, that lost them a mark straight away. We were served promptly by another waitress who was pleasant enough but that was the only time me saw her, the food came by another waitress which was served around 10 minutes after our order. Very good timing because we were hungry and any longer would have irritated me! There were around 5 or 6 members of staff rushing around the place which was good to see, but getting their attention was a different matter. Once our drinks were finished we had to try and grab someone to ask for a refill, which I hate doing because I know they are busy people and I would feel so much better if they asked us instead. I am the customer after all. The only other time we were noticed was when we wanted to pay the bill. Well, that's obvious because they are a 'please tip me' company which states clearly on the bill service is not included. As I said, the service was minimal; it was adequate but definitely not an experience that would encourage me to refer people there for an evening out.
The restaurant when you first walk in looks large and spacious, but then you begin to realize just how close together the tables are. So no room for private chat I am afraid. The most negative part of evening was that they had the air conditioning on high. It was freezing. I had to keep my coat on which is not advisable if you are eating pizza. I don't understand why as it was just as cold outside, if the service was better I would have asked them to turn it down a bit but I didn't want to spend the rest of the evening getting someone's attention so I just got on with eating the food. The music was also considerably loud. In my opinion, music should be there as a background sound, not something that you have to try and talk over. But the fact I noticed that I had to raise my voice to talk over it was not very impressive. One last thing. If you ever go to this Pizza Hut, do not, and I repeat do not use the toilets that are available upstairs. I will not go into detail, but if I had used them before my meal, I would not have been able to eat. I am sure you get the picture.
When I have Pizza Hut again it will be because of the food which I was impressed by, yet I am more inclined to get it delivered or take it away to eat in the comfort of my own home. I doubt I will go to this branch again due to the actual layout of the restaurant more then anything else but it was not bad enough to put me off going to another branch. Hopefully one that has the air-con on low in winter!
Thanks for reading.
Summary: Great pizza for a casual dinner.
