Advantages: Great staff and service, Nice food for cheap prices, Nice environment
Disadvantages: Dirty toilets
My boyfriend and I recently spent a week in Birminghan and decided to visit Star City (awaiting product suggestion to review the complex) which is an entertainment complex with cinema, bowling, restaurants etc. After walking around for a while, we decided to grab a bite to eat and the only place that we really fancied was Pizza Hut.
When we first walked into the restaurant, I pointed out how small it was and that all of the tables seemed to be very close to each other. However, once we were seated, we seemed to have plenty of space around our table and we didn't notice any of the other customers.
The restaurant itself is quite small, however it seems that everything has been laid of perfectly to give you space to move and to have privacy.
As we ordered to our table, I didn't really see the buffet area but a quick glance at it gave me the impression that it was quite big and the size of the restaurant hadn't affected the menu in any way.
I usually avoid Pizza Hut restaurants as I have always had bad experiences with the staff being miserable and not seeming to want to help in any way.
The staff in the Star City restaurant were great. When we first walked in a young man greeted us and quickly showed us to a table. He seemed mortified when he realised the table had not been cleaned and would not stop apoligising, my boyfriend and I just sat down with smiles on our faces and told him not to worry.
We were then allocated a young waitress to our table who could not have been more helpful if she tried. She gave us plenty of time to discuss (and argue over) what we wanted to eat. When we ordered starters and a pizza, she assured us that she would give us a few minutes after taking our starters before she brought our pizza over, which I thought was great as we couldn't have eaten all of it at once.
Also, when we ordered dips to go with our pizza, she lowered her voice a bit and told us we would receive the same dips free with our starters so she would just forget to take them so that we did not have to pay for more.
Unfortunately, we had eyes to big for ours bellies and by the time our pizza arrived we could only handle one slice each. After struggling for a couple of minutes and arguing about leaving a £20 pizza on the table, she came over and said 'you look like you're struggling. How about I box this up for you and you can take it home?'. I had seen a few people doing this anyway, but I would never have asked them to box it up and have never had a member of staff offer to do so before. So this really made her stand out to me.
I'm always wary about leaving money on the table when leaving a restaurant, so went to find her to pay as we were leaving. We had left an extra £5 on the plate, as a tip for her, and she even tried to hand this back to me and I had to force her to take it!
I always forget how great Pizza Hut is, since it's so cheap I always expect it to be poor quality.
We ordered a sharer starter which had chicken dippers, potato wedges, cheese dippers. Along with coleslaw, BBQ Sauce and Sour Cream dip. I think this cost around £6 but the plate that it arrived on was huge and we actually found that we were almost full from this!
For our main, we ordered a large pizza, one half pepperoni one half chicken, with the cheesy bites around the edge. This came to around £17 but it was huge and we were full after one slice each. The cheesy bites were lovely and, before the offer of boxing it up, we decided we would just eat these and leave the pizza. However, even these were too much for us! The rest of the pizza was really nice, all of the topping were very tasty and didn't taste like cheap pizza.
Usually, I wouldn't mention toilets somewhere but I found that these were the only part of the restaurant which lost marks. They were disgusting!
I don't expect public toilets to be immaculate, but when you have seen three members of staff go in there and you still go in to toilet roll all over the floor, no toilet rolls in the holders and a disgusting smell, you wonder if they ever clean the toilets.
Apart from having to go to the loo in the disgusting conditions, I found this restaurant was the best Pizza Hut that I have visited and I was extremely happy with the service that we received.
The food wasn't too expensive, our bill came to £35 with drinks, and was great tasting, good quality food.
The staff were lovely and I feel that they really tried to make every customer's experience a good one, after all this is how you bring customers back! If we lived in Birmingham, we would definately go back there.
Also, despite looking very small and closed in, the tables were spaced quite far apart and we hardly noticed the other customers. This was a bonus for me as I get very paranoid about people looking at me when I'm eating, so I felt very comfortable.
Overall, I give this restaurant 5 stars. Even though the toilet were disgusting, everything else was great and there are toilets situated in the complex if you're that bothered!
Summary: Highly recommended, a great place to eat!
