“ TRADITIONAL ENGLISH. St Aldates, Oxford. Tel: +44 (0)1865 242 230. Opposite Christchurch College, with a discreet dining room, this is a formal, though not pretentious restaurant, considered to be one of the finest resatuarants in Oxford. But, do expect i „
What an absolute diddle! We wanted a very special place to take long-time friends to spend a once in a lifetime reuinion when we revisted Oxford after being students there decades ago. The Elizabeth was always THE place to go. We hunted information for the restaurant and could find very little that seemed current but eventually found the phone number and booked. Well, I thought I had, although it was hard to be certain as the clearly Chinese person taking the call was not all that easy to understand.

If you are in Oxford and fancy an expensive treat then by far the best choice of restaurant is The Elizabeth, on St Aldates. nb. It is advisable to book in advance. The food is quite simply the best you will find in Oxford and is served in relatively generous quantities. There is a good wine list at reasonable prices - eg for a few pounds more than the usual price of a House White at say Pizza Express you can have a bottle of something worth drinking. The atmosphere is quiet and civilised, the service excellent and the staff friendly. Oh, and if you do go: have the coffee, I won't spoil it by explaining why...
