Advantages: Good food
Disadvantages: Service, price
I visited several restaurants in Newquay while there, going to start with Pizza Express, a new restaurant under a set of new flats along the cliffs, looking over Great Western Beach. They have indoor and outdoor seating in the restaurant. When we visited, in July, the outdoor seating area was closed and looked like it had taken a battering in the wind and rains!
It was pretty busy, probably about 75% full on a Friday night. We only visited as the flat we had rented had left us a voucher for 50% off our food bill at Pizza Express so we thought we'll have a bit of this. We've visited Pizza Express before in Southampton and Brighton, so know what to expect. We were greeted quickly and taken to a table near the front of the restaurant with a good view over the coastline. The restaurant was buzzing and fairly noisy but not overly so.
The menus were given out and drinks offered, which were brought over in a few minutes. Our order was taken a few minutes later when we were ready. The menu in Pizza Express is quite large, giving you choices of pizza and pasta dishes. All the usual pasta dishes are available if you don't fancy pizza so you won't feel left out. There are also a good selection of side dishes and starters, I choose a flatbread, trying to avoid having Garlic Doughballs like usually (far too filling but soo delicious). They have a huge selection of pizzas, on normal and extra thin bases, as I'm not a big fan of olives and anchovies, it does limit the selection down by quite a few.
The starters were served up after about 10 minutes, and were well cooked and delicious. The plates were taken away and the mains delivered after another 15 minutes. When we had finished our starters we had also finished our drinks, and at that point our waiter seemed to disappear and we never saw him till we finished our main courses, so we did save ourselves wasting money on drinks, shame on you Pizza Express for not looking after you're customers. Perhaps they didn't have enough staff or weren't trained very well, but it was lax service!
The food itself was up to the great standards it usually is, and when you're only paying 50% of the cost of it you don't mind at all. Just the service let it all down. Still it won't put me off visiting Pizza Express at home, especially when you can pay with Tesco Deals vouchers!
Summary: One of the better places you can spend Tesco Deals vouchers!
