Advantages: lovely atmosphere, wonderful food, not too pricey, lovely staff.
Disadvantages: None.
Having eaten there previously, and thoroughly enjoying it, I was rather delighted to be taken to "Sams Chop House" for Valentines night.
What and where is it?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sams Chop House" (8 South Parade,Leeds,LS1 5QX, link to a map is at the bottom of my review) is an extension of Manchesters "Sams Chop House", and "Mr Thomas's Chop House".
Opening hours.
~~~~~~~~~~~
The bar is open between 11am to 11pm from Sunday to Thursday, and 11am to 12pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Lunch is served between 12am and 3pm.
Dinner is served between 5.30pm to 11pm, with last orders being from 9.30pm Sunday to Thursday, and until 10.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Atmosphere.
~~~~~~~
The building is lovely on both the inside and the outside. The mixture of dark wood heavy curtains, and pretty chandeliers makes the restaurant really lovely to look at, and very comfortable to eat in.
The seating is very comfortable, and although there are quite a few tables packed into a relitively small space, it doesnt feel cramped at all.
If you are a curious (easily bored) customer, like myself, then you will enjoy all of the interesting things to look at and read. On the walls, there are caricatures of staff and customers, drawn by the artist David James Moss. There are also interesting quotations, reviews, and little bits of trivia on the walls, and the menus.
The food.
Im going to tell you what I ate on Valentines night (from a special Valentines menu), but also whats available normally.
On Valentines, we ordered from a special menu. For £34.95, we got three courses, a glass of champagne, and some little nibbly bits to start.
For my starter, i chose Chicken Liver parfait, which i have eaten there before.
You can order this on the normal menu for £5.85.
The Chicken Liver parfait is encased in truffled butter, on crusty bread, with a side of red cranberry chutney.
This is a beautiful beautiful starter. The parfait is gorgeously smooth, and the truffled butter is the perfect compliment. My only gripe is, that there isnt really enough crusty bread, but its only a small complaint.
Other starters available on the normal menu include-Scottish mussels, cauliflower cheese soup, potted shrimps and bubble and squeak with poached egg and bacon.
Starters range in price from £4.85 to £6.35.
For my main, I ordered a well done steak (yes, everyone shouts at me for having steak well done...but i dont want it moo-ing) with bernaise sauce, and pan fried mushrooms. A little bowl of chips were brought out on the side.
The steak and the sauce were absolutely beautiful. The chips were cripsy, and just the right amount.
This meal isnt available on the normal menu, however, you can order a steak served with Cafe du Paris butter and chips for £16.50.
Other mains available on the day to day menu include-Steak and Kidney Pudding, English Lamb shoulder,Slow cooked beef in red wine and Onions and Sams famous homemade corned beef hash (to name a few).
Vegitarian main meals are also available. They include- Wild mushroom wellington, Beetroot red onion and Yorkshire fine fettle tart, and (if you dont mind eating fishies) Pan seared Salmon, (to name a few).
Main meals range in price from £9.25 to £16.50.
For my dessert I enjoyed a chocolate cake with dark chocolate sauce, and banana on the side, which was utterly delicious.
Again, this isnt available on the normal menu, however there is lots to choose from, including a gorgeous sticky toffee pudding, for £4.85, and seasonal fruit crumble, also for £4.85.
Puddings are mostly £4.85, except for the cheeseboard, which is £8.75, and big enough to share.
A childrens menu is also available, as is a sunday lunch menu, where you pay £14.95 for two courses, and £17.95 for three courses.
Overall thoughts.
This is a really lovely restaurant to eat at. The staff are friendly and very efficient. The food is very tasty, and beautifully served, and quite a reasonable price for a nice night out. There are many drinks and wines available, for all price ranges.
Extras.
~~~~~
There is live Jazz music on Sundays from 1pm.
