I abhor American cultural imperialism as much as the next man. But Hamburgers I love. I've eaten them on five continents, at all times of night and day, in swanky resaurants and from scummy roach coaches. Ones made from beef (or course), beans, venison, horse, buffalo, and quite possibly dog food. Good ones. Bad ones and ones that made me crouch over a toilet bowl in a Hong Kong hotel 100% sure I was going to meet my maker. But I have never, in all my life, eaten a finer burger than that served by Schwartz Brothers of Bath (and Bristol). I do not know if there really are siblings with the German for Black as a surname. I was never served by anything other than stroppy students, who looked down their nose at all the customers equally, unless you were one of their mates. But the service was never slow or poor. The burgers are cooked before your eyes, char-broiled in fact. The buns are toasted right there in front of you too. Then piled high with fresh-cut salad, and topped with the topping of your choice from a selection that surely includes blue-cheese but also includes some others I never bothered to pay attention to. There's a vegetarian option, and you can accompany your burger with perfectly acceptable chips, a delicious shake or a Coke. Probably, I don't really know nor care, none of this frippery matters. All that matters is that Schwartz burgers are the finest in the World. OK, so this is just my opinion, but as I lived in Bath for four years, many friends visited. Each was taken to Schwartz, and each left saying, through a mouth full of burger - just like their parents told them not to - that it was... "the best burger I have ever had in my life." And all of this for prices directly comparable with McWimpyKing. Nowadays, although I live some 200 miles from Bath, I sometimes drive down there... just to have a Schwartz burger. As 100% proof that we do not live in a meritocracy, while MacDonalds open their 56,000,
000th restaurant, Schwartz have only three. Two in Bath and one in Bristol. But Bath is a lovely place, and the Schwartz on Milsom street is just opposite a perfectly excellent pub. So maybe you should put a visit to the city on your list of things to do before you die.
