Baguette Express (Kirkcaldy)
by AndrewBrough
Baguette Express has become the staple of my lunchtime. This chain, including the one featured here in Kirkcaldy, is one that spreads across a huge area of Scotland with multiple shops in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Perth.
You can get a multitude of different main items such as the titled baguette, jacket potato, salad ... boxes or paninis. What is different about baguette express is that huge variety of fillings you can have, and it is completely your choice. The staff are also very helpful if you aren't sure what you are after.
The shop is primarily a take away, but much in the style of subway they provide a few stools etc for people to sit on. The staff are also very friendly in general, much better than subway it must be added. The ingredients also taste much fresher than your standard subway, which is one of its main attractions. They also provide a good selection of other food products such as cakes, crisps and drinks.
In conclusion its a great place for a snack or main meal, highly recommend. Read the complete review |

13th Note Cafe (Glasgow)
by lexx
The 13th Note is a combination bar, vegetarian/vegan cafe and music venue. This review is about the cafe part (there's a separate listing on dooyoo for the music venue, which I'll review at a later date).
The upstairs of this venue is divided in half with the front as the bar and the back as a cafe area with table service. ... That doesn't mean you can't sit in the bar area to eat- you simply order at the bar instead of having staff come to you. The seating is a mix of normal tables and booths which seat up to about 8 so are great if you're in a bigger group. The walls usually have some interesting art to look at since they offer free exhibition space to artists. This rotates every fortnight so there's often something new.
The food served is excellent quality and free of genetically modified ingredients. Most is suitable for vegans, with the few dishes that aren't marked "V" to denote vegetarian. The non-vegan dishes are prepared in a separate kitchen area so there's no worry about cross contamination. The menu also marks anything that is gluten free or can be made gluten free if you ask.
Two different menus are available; the standard one and a lunch menu. The main menu is served until 7 in the bar area and until late in the cafe. It is divided into starters/snacks, main meals and desserts. The starters and snacks feature things like soup, salads, breads, chips, nachos and olives, ranging in price from £2 - £4.50. The main meals are a mix of vegan dishes such as vegetable curry, vegetable tagine and mezethes platters, and versions of dishes usually containing meat like burgers, spaghetti carbonara and haggis, neeps and tatties. Main dishes cost around £5-£7, taste freshly prepared and are good portion sizes. You're also brought sauces including vinegar, ketchup and chutney with your main meal with vegan mayonaise available on request. A particularly nice touch is the vegan parmesan brought out if you order a pasta dish.
The desserts made here are amazing. All are vegan and the cheesecake is the most delicious I've had. A lot of non-vegans enjoy it too and I have meat eating friends who come here just for it. The desserts cost around £3-£4 and you can add in a topping such as vegan ice cream, chocolate/toffee/strawberry sauce, or vegan cream for 90p.
The lunch menu is only available from 12 - 5 and features baked potatoes, wraps, sandwiches and pizzas. All of these cost around £4.75. The desserts from the main menu are also available.
The staff here have always been friendly. Service is quick and they're happy to answer any questions about ingredients so it's a great place for people with allergies or other dietary requirements. I've also never felt rushed to finish my meal and leave- you can linger for as long as you like.
For those of you with children, they're welcome here until early evening and the atmosphere is relaxed and family friendly.
My only criticism is the toilets. They're downstairs in the music venue and are covered in grafitti. They are clean however so it's not too much of a concern.
Overall I thoroughly recommend the 13th Note to anyone in Glasgow whether vegan/vegetarian or not. The food, service and atmosphere are excellent and it's well worth a visit. Read the complete review |

Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Shop (Aberdeen)
by TravellerJen
I first tried my first Baskin Robbins in the Dominican Republic, 3-4 years ago. I had heard of it, but we either didnt have them in England or just no in my local area. I didnt know this but they trade under the name of Millie´s Cookies in the UK, which everyone knows about right. You can always smell their cookies from miles away. ...
Baskin Robbins is an ice cream shop that sells almost every single flavour you can think. You can eat them from tubs, alot of different sizes, cones, again in different sizes. They dont only sell ice cream too, they sell drinks cakes and soft ice creams too. You can even create your own sundae, by picking your ice cream flavours, the sauces and let the staff do the hard work, whilst you get to sit back, relax and eat away.
I remember that the Baskin Robbins staff wear really cute, blue and pinky purple uniforms that match the colour format of the logo. This seemed very american and made me assume that this company are indeed an american company.
Some of the flavours of ice cream, Baskin Robbins has include:
Chocolate, English Toffee, Mint Chocolate Chip, Rocky Road, Rum Raisin, Vanilla, Cookies n Cream, Pralines n Cream and many many more!
My favourite flavours are mint chocolate chip and the cookies n cream. Both are absolute classics but absolutely delicious too. Yummy!
This is an absolutely heavenly shop for those in need of a dessert or just something sweet. They taste absolutely great and are reasonably priced too. I remember buying a medium sized tub of my favourite ice cream flavours for apporximately £2.20. Not only do I love this shop for its products and its cute customer service but it also brings back memories of when I was in the Dominican Repbulic doing my volunteer work. Read the complete review |
