Upon deciding to visit Cornwall the idea of visiting Rick Stein's restaurant was raised. A telephone call to the general number that deals with his different restaurants in the town soon indicated that the idea may not come to fruition, Although we were telephoning three weeks prior to going down there, most times were fully booked. However, when extending the times to include lunchtimes a table was found and we booked a table for Sunday Lunch. When we arrived the table was ready, after being seated were offered two types of home made bread. We first visited The Seafood Restaurant in 2000, during a trip touring Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, and the highlight of the many hotels and restaurants we visited was Rick Stein's. At that time we stayed in one of the rooms above the Restaurant which at the time were one of three different accommodation options in Padstow owned by Rick and Jill Stein. You could also stay at rooms above St Petroc's Bistro or most cheaply at the Cafe. We live in Lincolnshire so a trip to Padstow involves about a 7 hour journey and we knew if we had any plans to return there, it would have to turn out to be something pretty special. I have just returned from a weeks holiday in Padstow, Cornwall which is rapidly becoming a gastronomic Mecca. The pace was set by TV seafood chef Rick Stein, who opened his seafood restaurant in 1975 and this year celebrates the restaurant's 25th anniversary. We ate there on 17 September. Starters include local oysters, stir fried mussels in black bean sauce and his excellent renowned fish soup. Both my husband and myself chose lobster ravioli with tomato and basil sauce which was delicious.
