Senor Dicks (Newquay)
Advantages: Friendly staff, nice atmosphere
Disadvantages: Slightly above average food
My husband and I are regular visitors to a quiet little campsite just outside Newquay, but we always enjoy travelling into town for a nice meal out. We have tried quite a few places, and were recently stuck for ideas. There is a feature on the maps on my smartphone, where it can search for local restaurants, so we used this and the place with the best reviews was Senor Dicks. We both love mexican food, so thought, 'why not'?
The restaurant is located in the centre of Newquay, almost right next to Bertie's Nightclub. We were lucky and managed to get a parking space on the road right opposite - there are plenty of car parks in the town but they can be pricey.
It was a Monday night, and we weren't expecting many people to be in the restaurant, but it was quite busy and there seemed to be a lovely atmosphere on walking in. We were greeted by a smiling waitress who showed us to our table.
The place itself looks as though it could be either a bar or a restaurant. The bar area is fairly central and has stools around it, the restaurant tables are spread around to either side. On the night that we were there, there was a nice ambience, but I'm not sure I would have liked it as much on a Friday/Saturday when people were coming in just to use the bar. There were various mexican bits and pieces adorning the walls and ceilings and it generally looked like a clean, well maintained restaurant.
It wasn't going to be a rowdy one as we were driving and it was the first night of our holiday and, following a long drive, we just wanted something nice to eat and an early night. Between us we ordered a diet coke and a 'Surfs Up' non-alcoholic cocktail, which was divine! Our order was taken fairly quickly and we soon had our Jalapeno Poppers infront of us. These are possibly my all time favourite starter and I was really looking forawrd to them. We decided that we would share the starter - of the 5 on the plate, I did manage to end up having 3! Unfortunately, they didn't quite live up to my high expectations. Don't get me wrong, they were nice, but they were too hot in the middle and the flavour was lost as a result of this. They came with a red pepper jam, which I found a little odd, but it was nice enough.
On to the main course, and when it arrived, boy were we glad we had only shared a starter! My husband had a chicken enchilada and I opted for the chilli beef. The plates came jam packed with food. The enchiladas themselves were absolutely massive and practically bursting with the amount of meat and sauce in them, not to mention the oodles of melted cheese on top. The dish was accompanied by a large portion of mexican rice, refried beans and a dollop of sour cream! It was well cooked and really tasty and, despite us both having large appetites, neither of us could quite finish the whole plateful!
Plates were cleared shortly after finishing and service was always with a smile. Neither of us could stomach a dessert (unlike us!), so we opted for the bill. It came to around £33 in total which wasn't too bad. The starter was £5.50 and the mains were £10.50 each. The diet coke was pretty cheap but the non-alcoholic cocktail a bit pricier.
The staff were still friendly as we left, holding the door open for us and flashing big smiles. We left with full tummies and a happy feeling that we had found somewhere new to head to on holiday. I would recommend Senor Dicks to anyone looking for a nice mexican restaurant. It's not outstanding food, but the staff and general atmosphere seemed to make up for anything that the food lacked.
Summary: Would definitely recommend
