Advantages: Friendly, Good Atmosphere, Good choice of drinks
Disadvantages: Will use up all your money if you aren't careful!
Senor Dicks can be found only a few hundred meters from Berties pub and club in Newquay, Cornwall. There is a small pay and display car park near by, along with a larger car park at the same location for the Somerfields supermarket, also situated there. These car parks are normally fairly empty, although at the height of the holiday season, and at certain times of the day, you will be less likely to be able to park than at other times such as when we last went…. Saturday 12th May, a group of us took a mini bus to Newquay to celebrate a friend’s birthday. At 8:30 pm the mini bus pulled into the virtually empty car park described above and we disembarked, heading for Berties pub. Now, for some reason my friends didn’t want to stay there so we headed down the road. I didn’t know where we were going, but we ended up at Senor Dicks. Senor Dicks is a Mexican restaurant, well advertised on the local independent radio station, Pirate FM. I have never eaten here, and this was the first occasion that I have ventured inside the building. We climbed up a flight of stairs and arrived in a very warm, brightly painted room – these were the first two things that caught my attention. It had been a very warm weekend, so perhaps this explained the warmth in this room so it may well be colder at other times of the year. There was a good friendly atmosphere, and a range of seating including stools round the bar, comfy seats around the tables at the sides of the room and covered wicker seats round tables towards the middle of the room. On arrival, we took a look at the cocktail menu but I decided not to drink too much and had a Malibu and coke. When my friends returned from the bar, I was told about a drinks promotion they had on at the time, a kind of “happy-until-nine-o’clock-when-the-pri ces-go-back-up”. At this time the cocktails were all £2 so I thought I would have one. Many of the drinks included either Bail
eys or Kaluha and I didn’t think it would be a good idea to mix creamy drinks with coke and Malibu so I chose one that included neither. I looked through the list of drinks and eventually chose one, unfortunately it was a shooter, so instead of costing £2, it was in fact £2.50. It was called “Spectrum” and contained layers of Midori, Blue Bols and Grenadine. I didn’t have the stomach to down it in one, but it still tasted nice. A while after this I had another drink, this time I decided not to worry about the chance of the drinks curdling in my stomach and had an FBI. This cocktail was delicious! It was made from Baileys, Kaluha and I think the other shot was Tequila, although I’m not certain. This was then blended with ice cream whilst chocolate syrup was drizzled onto the inside of the glass, and the blended mix poured in. The result was a cool, creamy, luxurious drink that didn’t taste very alcoholic and was almost milkshake-like. By this time the promotion had ended so I had to pay the full price of £3.75 (I think). Other cocktails were “Mellow Melon” (made mainly from Midori), “Sea Breeze” (this one was quite bitter with cranberry in it) and “Sex on the Beach” (all I can remember about this one was that it tasted quite nice and was blue, so it would have had Blue Bols in it). Still, enough about the drinks! It often took a while to get served, and as I wasn’t actually buying the drinks, I’m not sure how many people were behind the bar, but I guess there were either one or two people (apparently there were actually 5 people; one was being trained and therefore had a trainer designated, so there were only 3 fully functional bar people there - if you catch my drift {:o) ). The bar itself was fairly long, but only really in comparison with the room itself. There were a few cubicles in the ladies, and these were averagely well kept – they were definitely not the worst
I had ever seen but they were far from pristine. So, in summary, if you are planning a night out in Newquay, and fancy going somewhere different, or trying a few cocktails, I would recommend Senor Dicks. It may be a little pricey to stay there the whole night, but according to what my friends were saying, it was cheaper to drink there than in the club we were going to. I hope you have enjoyed this opinion and that I have told you everything you need to know.

- 28/08/01 Rhanks for the comments everyone... Yea... I haven't been there to eat Nikki, generally I go to Newquay in the evenings and when I am there during the summer I don't really fancy mexican food.. I think I probably should have asked for this category to be created elsewhere.... |
