The Slattery Story Back in 1967, husband and wife team Bernard and Margaret Slattery opened a bakery in Crumpsall, Manchester. Their son John still at school, helped in the school holidays and most weekends. At 16, John went to Salford College to formally train in baking and confectionery. John’s sister Ann also attended college a few years later and met husband to be Stephen Barnes. Together they helped run their parents successful bakery and in 1991 took over the business when their parents retired.
