Slow Boat Chinese Restaurant (Chester)
Advantages: great food, good service
As I mentioned on my previous review, I recently took a small trip to Chester to experience the town properly. While there I did many things but one of my most memorable parts was the places I ate in. I fancied a Chinese one night and instead of having a takeaway I wanted to go to a restaurant to get the real experience. I had asked a few locals and the majority all pointed me in the direction of a restaurant called the Slow Boat. It was pouring rain and I didn't really know where I was going but after asking more locals I found myself outside the building.
It is sort of out of the way down a side street from the main town you come to a tall brick building with the letters Slow Boat glinting at you from the streetlight reflecting. I went in but realised they didn't actually open until 5.30pm I proceeded up the stairs as sometimes they might be open. I walked in just to get out of the rain and they were sat eating but they were lovely and let me sit in to dry off and asked if I wanted drinks twenty minutes prior to official opening which was very kind as it saved me waiting in the cold stairway for twenty minutes.
The waitress then gave me the menu's to have some time to look over. I had a look over the menu, it isn't the cheapest but I was so hungry I didn't really care. We all decided on a starter as we were starving and knew this would arrive relatively promptly. It was the platter which consisted of ribs in ok sauce, two variations of spring roll, won tons, prawn toasts and crackers. This came out sizzling and was absolutely amazing, probably the nicest food I have had at a Chinese. The sesame prawn toasts were at least 2 cm thick which I had never seen before, and the sauce on the ribs was just perfect.
We ordered wine and they brought over the bucket chilling and quickly took away our plates to follow up the next course. At the start we had told her what main meals we wanted so they could prepare them quickly. They then brought these out so the people at my table ordered curries which were placed on a mini gas hob to keep them at a warm temperature. I ordered meat and vegetable noodles which came in a bigger serving than the curry and was cheaper, and there was so much meat it was brilliant and was tasty as well.
Once the main meals were over I was full and had no room for dessert. They didn't have a big selection but one waiter seemed to want us out whereas the rest didn't care. It wasn't packed but at the weekend I'm sure it is a lot busier.
Their menu is split into different sections so there is a wide choice. They have starters, soups, seafood, chicken, beef, pork/lamb, duck, vegetarian, rice/noodles. You have to buy rice on top of the cost of your meet which is why the price goes up so high. For my meat and noodles it was roughly £10 but it wasn't too bad considering and the curries were about £15 overall with rice. At the weekend they do all you can eat banquet from roughly £19 per person and they have special lunch menus.
The overall decor in here is very nice it has a culture in here and a tranquil atmosphere which I like. The staff were very attentive and pleasant and made us feel very welcome. They made sure everything was just right for us and I would definitely go back. It is one of the nicest Chinese meals I have ever had and I recommend you visit if in Chester.
