Sonny's Locale, Whickham Restaurant
We like to go out every Friday for something to eat and because we have Little Miss and grandson, tend to go somewhere local. We had never tried this restaurant before so decided to give it a go. The proprietors had already been running a restaurant in Tynemouth for 8 years when they branched out into Whickham.
The restaurant is situated on the Front Street which is the main street running through Whickham and although it is out of the city centre, there is plenty going on for anyone who wants to continue the revelry post food. Parking is a bit tricky with double yellow lines right outside the restaurant but there is free on road parking just a very short walk along the way, and (always a bonus for me) an atm just outside.
The entrance to the restaurant isn't especially inspiring with a flat and curtained window and a plain door through which we can't see anything. As soon as we get inside I realise that first impressions of the exterior does not in any way let me know what it will be like inside. Inside the restaurant, there is a smallish bar close to the entrance and as well as the main dining area a set of stairs leads to another dining area. The tables are light and modern as are the chairs, and there are booths at the edges of the dining area. The thing I liked most about the restaurant was the décor- lots of twinkly lights and floral fruit and wine displays as well as plenty of mirrors making the whole place light bright and airy. However, it still manages to feel cosy and intimate- the place lighting and mood of the place is just right for dining.
There is a good selection of modern and classical Italian dishes and as well as the a la carte menu there is a specials board offering a starter and main course for £9. This is great value, one of our party ordered the bruschetta and the vegetarian pizza, which was pronounced delicious. Little Miss ordered the lasagne which came served bubbling hot right the way through, and which was a really good size- way too big for her to finish it all. I ordered the meat balls and spaghetti served in a tomato sauce. This was served in a large white wide rimmed bowl nicely decorated with seasoning round the edge. We had grandson with us and although there didn't appear to be a children's menu we ordered a marguerite pizza and because it was for a child a small version of the pizza was served. The meals were finished off with ice creams for the children and coffees for the adults and in total was around the £35 mark which considering a couple of glasses of wine were ordered as well as soft drinks, this was great value.
There are also selected Happy Hour pizza and pasta dishes at £4.75 early evening, including Friday and Saturday lunch. On Sundays the Happy Hour is also available, as well as Sunday Roast with all the trimmings for £5.90 along with classical puddings starting at £3.80. The a la carte menu features a great selection of pizza and pasta dishes as well as fish, sea food, game, chicken and beef dishes, all served with fresh vegetables.
Every Tuesday is Mediterranean Banquet Night with a selection of dishes from around the Mediterranean; all you can eat for £9.90, children £4.90.

The restaurant serves good sized portions of tasty food at reasonable prices. The staff are friendly and helpful and service is efficient and quick but we didn't feel rushed. Children are welcome in the restaurant and it is very child friendly with high chairs available. When we were there early Friday evening, there was a good mix of diners- families, couples and a couple of groups of people.
The tables have plenty of space between them so you don't feel on top of other people and whilst it is all very modern it still retains a rustic harm.
A recommended restaurant.
