Speranza Italian Restaurant Belfast I ate at this restaurant a few weeks ago as part of a friend's 30th birthday party and decided to do a review of the restaurant and the service we had that night. Location The restaurant is located centrally and is only a short walk from Belfast City Hall. The address is 16-19 Shaftsbury Square which is regarded by many as being part of Belfast's Golden Mile. (The stretch of road where many bars and restaurants can be found). There has been a restaurant on the site as far back as I can remember although this is the first time I had tried it. Parking for the restaurant is not as the area in front is an urban clearway. There is some parking behind the restaurant but its all on street parking in an area which does not have the safest of appearances. Opening hours The restaurant is open Mon to Sat 5pm to Late and Sun 3pm to 10pm My experience The frontage of the building is glass fronted and looks quite well/expensive from the outside. They have a big sign in the window saying now under new management and unless im mistaken this sign or a version of it has been up in this window for the past five years. I had arranged to meet my friends at 7 and some of them were already seated when I arrived so I had no need to be directed to a seat but I was welcomed by a member of staff who offered to seat me. Whilst waiting on the rest of our party to arrive I was asked three time by the same member of staff if we were ready to order. This is despite the fact that I told him the first time that we were waiting on the rest of the party to arrive and pointed to the two empty seats opposite me. I wouldn't mind this but the restaurant was not that busy, it was the same guy who asked me three times in the space of five minutes. It gave me the first impression that they were in a rush to get us served and get us out of there. The restaurant itself is Italian with a Mediterranean twist. I opted for a garlic bread starter which we shared and chicken with pepperoni. The cost of my main dish was £11.25 and included a side order of chips. I have to say I enjoyed the food thought that it was reasonably well priced. As we were there for a party we had a cake for the birthday girl. This was left behind the bar and the staff brought it out when we asked them to. They did this part very well. The person who appeared to be in charge and of Italian descent made a real effort bringing it out and signing and made the birthday girl feel special. So full credit to him for that. Overall the meal was lovely and it was a nice restaurant. Its pretty big and has two floors. The night we were there (Thursday) It was far from capacity. I did find the service a little slow at times. For instance I had to remind the sever that I had asked for table water. Personally I think table water should be a given. I also noticed that my drinks order was left to sit on the counter whilst the server went off and served someone else. I.e took drinks order went to bar, waited on order and took order to people who ordered after me and then remember about me. I thought this was a little sloppy and worried how they would cope if they were busy. Having said that the food was good and at a reasonable price and its possible that someday I would go back. But I certainly wasn't blown away.
