Living in Birmingham myself, I can vouch for the fact that there isn't a great deal to do here once you have been to the Bullring a few times! I have particularly found this an issue in the school holidays whilst looking after my younger sister but ever since Star City has come along, this isn't as much of an issue anymore-there is so much to do there!!
For those with children/those that are big kids at heart, there are and abundance of activities to keep you entertained such as indoor mini golf, Laser Quest, bowling, indoor rock climbing, Powerleague football and an amusement arcade (including indoor dodgems)! There is also a fair and various other stalls set up on a section of the car park during certain periods of the year, which adds more excitement and variety to the place.
Also in the complex is a large cinema, Gentings casino and a Virgin Active gym, all of which I use regularly and would highly recommend. The main reason for most of my visits to Star City is for food though. There are several places to eat there ranging from fast food eateries (McDonalds,KFC,Burger King and Pizza Hut) to classic restaurants such as La Tasca, Harvester and Nandos so there is definitely something for everybody!
Each time I go to Star City there seems to be something new there which I love and I really do think there is nowhere else in Birmingham that offers anywhere near the same variety of activities. In my experience, they are all reasonably priced individually but if you wanted to make a day of it and do a couple of different things there it could get expensive but would say it would probably be worth it!
Finally, it is situated in a decent location as it isn't too far from Birmingham city centre, although I am pretty sure the buses aren't the most regular here so may be tricky to reach if you don't have your own transport.
If you can get there though, I would definitely recommend it as either a family day out or evening out with friends!
Before our recent trip to Birmingham, my boyfriend and I looked around for things that we could do whilst there. We were really struggling to find interesting places to visit when my boss recommended we take a trip to Star City and make a day of it.
We had never heard of Star City so took a look at their website and it instantly became the part of the break we were most excited about!!
** STAR CITY **
Star City is a large complex just outside of Birmingham City Centre which has everything you need for a great day out all under one roof. I would definitely recommend making a day trip to the complex, rather than visit for a few hours.
Inside the complex are several different activities that you can take part in. These include bowling, laser quest and indoor rock climbing. As well as these activities the complex holds a 'My Vue' cinema, small amusements arcade and a Virgin gym.
It is worth noting that the cinema holds 'Gold Screens'. These screens are for over 18s only and provide you with a more exciting cinema experience. On looking at their website, I found that Gold Class customers receive free popcorn and the comfort of large leather seats. There is also a bar area outside the screen which you can use throughout the movie.
After so much excitement, you are bound to be hungry. Luckily, the complex has several restaurants to choose from. These include Pizza Hut, Nandos, a steak house and a curry house. Pizza Hut offer great deals, including Kids Eat Free and all you can eat, whilst some of the other restaurants are slightly more expensive but look more sophisticated.
Unfortunately, Star City have updated their website and I cannot access it through my Internet Explorer, so I cannot give details of where the complex is. I can say that, when we visited, we took a taxi from the city centre (near the Bull Ring) which took around 20 minutes and cost £7 each way. This seemed acceptable to use considering the city centre has a difficult one way system, Star City seems to be quite difficult to get to so we would have gotten lost trying to find it ourselves and it was a long enough trip to cost this amount.
**So much to do, so little time!**
When my boyfriend and I visited Star City, we ignored people's claims that it would take us a whole day to enjoy all of the activities and arrived around 4pm. Upon arrival, we spent a good 30 minutes in the amusement arcade, throwing away around £20 but enjoying it at the time.
Afterwards we walked up to the cinema to see which movies were being shown, as we were hoping to go Gold Class and there were no movies that we fancied being shown in this screen, we decided to skip the movie.
We took a walk around and decided that Laser Quest would be boring with just two of us, we didn't fancy bowling and rock climbing was definitely not something we wished to take part in.
So the only thing left for us to do was eat! We looked at each restaurant before deciding on where to eat. The steak house and curry house seemed to be a little pricey for us and the que for Nandos looked a little too long. So we decided to go for Pizza Hut. I have already reviewed our experience of this restaurant, so wont go too into it, but the staff were very helpful and the food was lovely. A great dining experience!
Overall, we really enjoyed our visit to the complex, even though we hardly did anything there. I think this would better suit a family or a group of people, rather then 2 people, as there is a lot to do and doing this is a group would be much more exciting.
£7 each way in a taxi seemed very acceptable to us, as I have already said, as it is quite difficult to find. We expected it to be on a main road but the taxi seemed to take us through lots of streets full of houses before we arrived at the complex.
I would definitely recommend a visit to Star City if you are visiting Birmingham as it could be a really exciting day out. We visited the week before Halloween and a small fair had been set up in the car park, which could make the day even more interesting!
