Advantages: Coffe exactly as you like it, in civilised surroundings.

Disadvantages: Price.

Political issues aside, who doesn't love and rely upon Starbucks these days?

Yup, the bars are generic. But they are relaxing places to be - so why change the formula?

My mum has a real go at me for spending money at Starbucks when there are lots of local, individual coffee shops I could support. Also, she's read Naomi Kleins book, and has taken against American corporate domination. Fair enough!

But here is my argument.... Ok, it's true that there are heaps of coffee places around. But the bottom line for me is being able to get the exact coffee that I want - and specifically, being able to have my latte made with SKIMMED MILK!!

There is a good quarter pint of milk in those big cups - and most of us just don't want to gulp down a coronary along with our caffeine! None of my local cafes offer skimmed milk - and in fact even Costa only offers semi skimmed. Try asking for skinny if you want a blank look from a cappuccino monkey!

Say what you like about Americans - you can't dispute that when it comes to choice and service they put us to shame. Why can't we have a java exactly as we like it? Hey, we're WORTH IT!

And... do you want a freebie?

If you fill in a customer comment form at Starbucks (they're usually beside the till) and post it off (freepost of course) you will get back a lovely, personally written letter from their customer service manager. And... two free drink vouchers! The only dilemma is... how much whipped cream and caramel syrup can your system handle??

Ace op! I too have a mother who doesn't approve of Starbucks, and though I try to avoid giving them any more money, they have an outlet on my street which I've been known to frequent. Can't wait to get my (guilt)free coffees - Cheers for the info.
