Advantages: Control over filling, fresh ingredients
Disadvantages: Price
Yet again today as I dashed through Birmingham airport, I was reminded of just how many boxes Subway tick for me. Having just returned from a weekend in Florence and flown cattle class (thats Ryanair between me and you) I had been on the go from 5.30am and was overtired, hungry and desirous of something reasonably healthy after a weekend of sheer indulgence on pasta and pizza, as I came out of arrivals there it was - the Subway stand like a beacon of hope and reassurance!
Being on the weight watchers plan I adore Subway because although it always feels like a treat to get one of their sandwiches, if you dont have cheese you can get a lovely tasty lunch for a bargain of 4-5 points (on a 6" sub), this means I dont have to ruin my points count for the day whilst feeling satisfied and full.
Personally I usually stick to fillings which I know keep the points value low, today I opted for roast turkey with salad and sweetcorn on honey oat bread. Fantastic fresh taste, low points and it really hit the spot in terms of curing my hunger pangs.
The great thing about Subway is that everything is made in front of you and is tailored exactly to your liking, you know that the ingredients are fresh and the control is yours whether to go for healthy or one of the more indulgent options like the BMT or a meatball marinara.
It more expensive than you would pay to grab a sandwich from a supermarket but you get much better quality. The foot long subs are around £3-4 but then personally I can never manage this much bread in one sitting, a 6" sub is about right for a healthy portion size.
Subway also sell the usual range of soft drinks and crisps to accompany your meal (meal deals are available, you can add a drink and a packet of crisps to any sandwich for an extra fixed fee of £1.50), they also sell delcious freshly baked cookies although these will blow the diet!
If you are after something which verges on the right side of healthy and you have a couple of quid to spare you cant go far wrong with a subway.
Summary: Great food on the go, can be low WW points with the right fillings

- 01/02/09 I wish you could just have butter or margarine though. |
