Advantages: I really like the taste, and you can travel underwater in their rolls
Disadvantages: Not many really, although I tried putting a sub in water and it sank, very worrying
Subway is a fast food chain attempting to usurp the dominance of McDonalds, Burger King, and KFC by taking the approach of selling 'subs' ie submarine rolls with a choice of fillings.
How you order your food:
The first time I tried to order Subway I was thoroughly confused, and I think this puts off many people from going in. There are a myriad of choices to make, and if there is a queue behind you, you had better know what you want! The choices to make are:
What filling do you want?
What size sub do you want?
What type of bread do you want?
Do you want cheese on it?
Do you want it toasted?
What salad would you like?
What sauce would you like?
I now know exactly what my favourite sub is (Italian BMT, 12", on Italian Herb and Cheese Bread, with cheese, toasted, with lettuce jalapenos and red onions, and brown sauce) so I can rattle this off at the servers. This is personally one of my favourite things to eat, if I had to eat this for the rest of my life on a desert island I would not grumble. I always make a beeline for Subway if it is around, and it usually is as they seem to be on every high-street in the land. This sub sets me back around the £5 mark which is perhaps a little expensive but a typical meal from McDonalds is around that and will not fill you up nearly as well. All of their subs are also available as wraps.
You can then order other treats such as soft drinks, cookies, crisps and the like. The menu is constantly evolving and the latest addition I have seen is the breakfast wrap, which consists of a sausage, egg, and baked beans. Sounds awful but it was quite delicious, and cheap too at about 99p.
The customer service generally is quite poor, and I have been to probably 20 different Subway's. They often seem very rushed and flustered, which is partly understandable as it is a complex thing to do when the queue is building up, but I would rather feel a little more relaxed when ordering my treat. The other issue is that they often seem to just not listen to what you want. I have asked for brown sauce (ie HP sauce) and been given BBQ sauce on at least 5 occasions, this might just be the fact that the servers often seem to be from foreign climes and HP sauce is a very British thing!
The seating areas are kept reasonably clean and have a generic look throughout the chain. The décor is of a reasonable standard and certainly does not put me off. Most of their stores are quite small, but I assume this is because the subs are most often bought as takeaway food and to provide more seating would be a waste of money. This is reasonable as even at the busiest times I cannot remember struggling to find a seat.
How healthy:
Well not very of course, but who cares? If you are buying fast food of any kind then it's not going to be the healthy option, you're buying it because it tastes good and if you compromise by going for their 'lite' subs (otherwise known as tasteless subs) then quite frankly you are a fool in my eyes. Eat healthily at home when you know what is going into it, exercise, and treat yourself to a big fat juicy sub when you are out. Please do not research how many calories are in a sub, just scoff it and accept that it may have taken 5mins off your life. Live fast, eat Subway, die young.
Summary: Delicious rolls/wraps at reasonable prices, go try.

- 22/02/09 The prices used to be terrible, but the other fast food places are catching up quickly (a KFC with a side is now about £6, a Burger King meal ~£5.50). I suspect their prices will go up at some point in the near future, as they were traditionally a little dearer than the competition. |
