Advantages: Great choice and high quality
Disadvantages: Prices are too high
Subway is a sandwich chain that has grown massively in the past few years. It is difficult to walk anywhere these days, be it a high street or a train station without seeing a Subway outlet.
The sandwiches in Subway are made by hand in front of your eyes and exactly how you want them. This is my favourite thing about them because it means that you know that the sandwich has been freshly made and has got exaclty what you want in it. You have a choice of bread from a range of around 5. You also choose whether you want a 6 inch or foot long sandwich. Then you have a choice of what filling you would like from a varied menu, then a choice of a range of salad. You also have the option of having your sandwich toasted with cheese. Finally, there are a range of sauces that you can add to your sandwich. The choices really are endless and you can always guarantee a high quality sandwich when you buy from Subway. There are also snacks available such as cookies and crisps but the main product available are the sandwiches.
Despite loving the product that Subway offer, I have only given them 3 stars. This is because of a number of downfalls that I feel largely outweigh the positive. Firstly, I feel that the price of the sandwiches are far too high for what you actually get. Even though the sandwiches are very good, I feel that it is too much to pay the best part of £5 for one. They do offer the 'Sub of the Day' which is less expensive but this removes the element of choice that I personally love. A 6 inch sandwich is also obviously cheaper but I don't find that this fills me up so I would end up spending extra anyway. There are also meal deals available but again, I would rather just have a sandwich for less money than throwing in a drink and some crisps and paying a bit more. The issue with price has become even worse recently as you now have to pay an extra 30 pence to have your sandwich toasted with cheese, whereas this used to be free. I feel this in particular is far too much to be paying considering how much it must cost them for a few slices of cheese and 30 seconds of power for the toaster.
Another downside is that the choice, that I have been raving about up to now, can often be intimidating or confusing for new customers. It can be very difficult to make all of the decisions that you need to on your fist visit and in busy periods this can lead to even longer waiting times than normal. Obviously waiting times will be quite high anyway because each sandwich is being individually made.
Subway have recently bought out a new snack range including a meatball pot and a cheese toastie. I am not a fan of this menu. Firstly because I consider it to be a bit of a con. It is being advertised as great value, when I would suggest that it is still over priced considering what it is. For example, the meatball pot is just a pot with a few of the meatballs in that go into the meatball maranara sandwiches. The pot costs £1.19. Surely it is better value to get the meatball maranara when it is Sub of the Day for £1.99. The cheese toastie is effectively half of a 6 inch sub with some toasted cheese on it. This costs 79p. This seems ridiculously expensive when you consider what you can get for just over a pound more. Also, I believe that if you are going to Subway, you are going for a sandwich, which is what they specialise in. If I wanted a toasted cheese slice I would go somewhere like Gregs, so I really don't think that the value menu is a good idea at all.
Overall, I do believe that Subway is a very good chain, as long as they stick to what they are good at, which is sandwiches. I really belive that the quality of their sandwiches is very high and I love them every time I have them. The only thing is, I can't afford to have them very often because I feel that the price is far too high.
Summary: An occasional treat

- 05/06/09 I agree that they are fairly expensive, but since I'm always happy with a 6" and regularly go for sub of the day, it never costs too much for me. |
