Advantages: Filling, satisfying, delicious

Disadvantages: Always very packed and rushed in London

Subway is a takeaway sandwich store - the most delicious sandwich store in the world! I'd only occasionally tried them out over here but my husband and I practically lived on them when we were travelling in Asia.

Subway offers sandwiches which they call subs, wraps, salads, treats and drinks to choose from and for either a quick snack or a healthy lunch this is the perfect place to stop at. All subs are freshly made in front of you and the best part about it is that you get to pick every little detail of your food and it's made to suit exactly how you like it.

Firstly you decide which type of bread you'd like which include white, wholemeal and Italian. The bread is like a big long roll, is very fresh, always soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. If you're feeling hungry you can pig out on a footlong sub or choose to cut it in half and go for a 6 inch instead. There are then a wide range of fillings to choose from including:
~ Chicken and bacon ranch
~ Steak and cheese
~ Tuna
~ Meatball Marinara
~ Spicy Italian
~ Turkey breast
~ Veggie patty

These are just a range of the classic subs which are stuffed full to the brim with filings which usually all spill out the other side when you take a bite! There are other choices of subs including low fat subs which contain less fat and breakfast subs containing all the usual brekkie foods such as egg, bacon and sausage.

If you don't like the sound of any of the classics you can simply create your own as they prepare the sub in front of you. All the filings are set out inside a counter in front of you and you can simply pick and choose what you want. Meat comes first, then salad, then sauces and there are plenty of options for everyone. Usually cheese is put into every sub but if you prefer it without you can simply tell them this. My favourite part about Subway is that you can have the subs hot or cold. After the meat and cheese has been put in the bread, if wanted hot, it is put in the oven for a couple of minutes. This melts the cheese inside and heats up the meat which is just gorgeous and it crisps up the bread even more. The salad and sauce is then added afterwards and the salad provides a crisp cold taste in contrast to the rest which is soft and hot.

I'm not usually keen on salad in my sandwiches but from here I actually really enjoy it as it's always very crisp and fresh. Meals from here are healthy with a 6 inch classic sub containing around 400-500 calories and the low fat subs containing 200-300 calories but personally I wouldn't eat them too regularly as they are really filling and I'd feel I would be putting loads of weight on with them!

From memory, I think a 6 inch sub costs around £2.50 but I usually get a meal. In a meal you can add either crisps or a cookie and a drink and this costs around £3.50. This is great value as the subs are simply delicious and meals are really filling and satisfying. They also do a Sub of the Day which offers a certain classic sub on a certain day of the week for £1.99.

They also have a new snack menu which is great if you're out and about and feeling a bit peckish and all the snacks are great value. The snack menu includes:
~ All Day Breakfast Mini Wrap - a freshly toasted wrap packed with free-range egg omelette, baked beans and sausage (99p).
~ Cheese Toastie - half a freshly toasted roll smothered in melted Monterey cheddar cheese (79p).
~ Pepperoni Pizza Toastie - half a freshly toasted roll topped with pepperoni, marinara sauce and melted Monterey cheddar cheese (99p).
~ Bowl of Meatballs - meatballs in marinara sauce, smothered in melted Monterey cheddar cheese (£1.19)

My husband and I had a taste of both the different types of toasties last week. The cheese toastie was quite plain and boring with just cheese on top and it was too dry. My husband loves everything cheese and regularly has cheese sandwiches/toasties/paninis, etc. but even he wasn't too keen on this. The pepperoni however was delicious with the spicy taste of pepperoni and the added spice of the marinara sauce which meant it wasn't at all dry like the cheese toastie.

This is the perfect place to go for an occasional lunch meal or great for a quick and healthy snack. As I said above, we had so many of these in Asia (whenever we fancied a break from the Thai food), either as a quick snack for lunch on the beach or as a filling lunch in a day full of sightseeing. I do think that they were much tastier in Asia though than they are here for some reason. Maybe it's because the ones in London are always heaving with people and so the staff are always rushed off their feet and in a hurry. If you catch them on a less busy time though, you'll have a perfect meal from Subway and, for me, no other sandwich compares now!

Summary: Ooh I so fancy one now!

I love Subway but it's like sitting next to a smoker, the smell sticks to your clothes all day!
