Advantages: One of the healthiest fast food chains, smells great!!

Disadvantages: Prices have gone up recently!

Subway are a popular fast food chain, found in almost any medium sized town centre. Their range features primarily hot or cold takeaway sandwiches on fresh bread with a range of fillings. The good thing about Subway as a fast food chain is that actually their products have health benefits, and are not just "filler" food without nutritional value.

If you have never been into a Subway before, the order process can seem a little overwhelming! As you go in, you will be asked a few questions, so have some answers ready after consulting the menu!

1) What bread would you like? There is a choice between Italian (plain white bread), Hearty Italian (white bread with grains), Italian Herbs & Cheese (white bread with herbs and cheese), honey oat (brown bread with oats) and wheat bread (plain brown bread).
2) Would you like a six inch or a footlong? This is referring to whether you want a large sandwich or a small sandwich.
3) What filling would you like? (You have to choose from the displayed options - some will be on a deal with drinks and some won't be.)
4) Would you like cheese and toasted? You can opt to have your sandwich with or without cheese, and toasted in the oven or fresh.

Salads and wraps are also available with the same fillings.
Pricing in Subway is fairly reasonable, though recently they have seen price increases on their sandwiches, with the £3 deal becoming the £4 deal and the £5 deal becoming the £6 deal.
The service should be speedy, in some shops it is speedier than others!
They also offer breakfast sandwiches, nachos, cookies, crisps, tea, coffee & soft drinks.

For vegetarians like me there are only two options - veggie patty (burger type thing) or veggie delight (just cheese), but thankfully I love the veggie patty so will happily have that time and again. Subway staff change their gloves for veggies out of courtesy which I think is a nice touch.

--Personal experience--

I worked in a Subway outlet for 6 months and it was always hectic at lunchtimes at weekends and in the evenings after people finish work and kids finish school!

As they are all franchises, each Subway will have its own management and so things may be done slightly differently in each outlet. In our store we were very focussed on our regular customers and we had top customer service which meant people came back, but I think in busier stores it is harder to get that degree of personal service.

Ingredients are prepared freshly on the day or a few days before in the back, and breads are always made freshly on the day as are cookies.

After working in a Subway, I got into their sandwiches as I used to get discounts working in store! My order is a veggie patty on herbs and cheese bread with extra cheese with olives, lettuce & green peppers.

Obviously quality of service varies from store to store, with some stores leaving the bread in for so long it becomes too crisp, which is why in a good store, sandwiches will be taken out of the oven quickly.

If you go for the meatballs they are veeery messy and will probably fall out of the sandwich! If you request extra of a particular kind of salad, sandwich artists are happy to give you extra.
Cookies are chewy and tasty and only 50p, they come on special offers for 12 and 3 too.

--Tip for people on a diet--
You can still have a 6 inch sub for your lunch, just avoid the sauce! The sauce is where the calories are at, and if you just have salad and a filling, it is a sandwich on fresh bread with no extra fat!

There is a specially selected menu of healthy options called low fat subs and shows you the best subs in terms of calorie count. Weight watchers can have a subway, but not a mcdonalds!!

There are the same amount of calories in a low fat sub as in one medium portion of maccy ds fries I believe, and a Subway will leave you feeling fuller and more satisfied. I am a big fan! You cannot beat the Subway smell emanating from all their stores!

--Value for money--

If you are hungry, a Subway sandwich and a drink is a great deal at lunchtime and I like to go here for a treat on payday or when I just can't resist the delicious smell!

Summary: Fresh fast food - yum :)
