TGI's in Cheltenham is situated at 374 Gloucester Road in Cheltenham and is within walking distance of my house. For this reason, I probably go to Cheltenham's TGI's fairly often just because its convenient for me as I don't need to worry about getting a taxi there and back if I want to have a drink (and I always like to have a drink!). My impression of TGI's is that its a nice, friendly welcoming place where the staff work hard to make your evening as enjoyable as possible. Certainly in Cheltenham I have found this to be the case. For me, service is every bit as important as the food when I go out for a meal, and if I feel like I'm being taken care of then somehow it makes everything else okay. Like I say, they do work hard to please. TGI's is not somewhere to come if you want a romantic meal for two. Its loud and brash and affords little privacy. Its popular for birthdays and parties in general, largely because you can be as raucous as you please and no one seems to bat an eyelid. Be warned though, if its your birthday they WILL get you to stand on a chair while you're seranaded by the staff and customers singing happy birthday to you - which can be more than a little embarrassing! The food is okay. Its nothing special - but then I don't think anyone would expect cordon bleu cooking from a venue like this. It specialises in American diner food and so if you have a panging for chicken wings, or burgers, or a good Jack Daniels steak then you won't be disappointed. I generally tend to opt for the loaded potatoes skins and then the Jack Daniels Chicken which is tasty enough - although it loaded in calories and I wouldn't recommend coming here if you're watching your weight! The food always arrives fairly quickly and its cooked according to your specifications. I would like to see a little more green stuff in the way of salad and vegetables on the menu though. There is a cocktail bar there with an extensive list of alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails - which are where TGI's excels I think. There are quite expensive, but you get a decent size cocktail for your money. I would highly recommend the long island iced tea which will get you tipsy in no time at all. If there is a cocktail you want that's not on the list, they will do their best to make it up for you if its at all possible for them to do so. I think the cost of a meal out here is about right. Its not cheap, but its not expensive either - and you'll have a fun time. We usually end up paying about £20 a head for two courses, but of course drink is more expensive and you can pay up to £7.50 per cocktail - although most are around £5. I would recommend TGI's Cheltenham for anyone who wants a relaxed and casual night out where you don't need to worry about dressing up or about being sophisticated!
I never expect a lot from TGI Friday's when I visit it and I didn't get it when I recently visited the one in Cheltenham, situated in a glaring position on the Gloucester Road. You can't miss it, in its red and white blinding colours. You see, I've never been a big fan of clone restaurants and this is one in all its glory. There is simply nothing to distinguish it from every other TGIs I've been too. That being said, the restaurant staff were helpful and welcoming upon arrival. You had the usual Americana memorabilia stuck to every wall and roof in the area, while the decor was generally colourful, busy and glaring. Don't expect a quiet, romantic meal here. I made that mistake once; and never again. You always have the ubiquitous birthday meal or hen party inside. Que the usual "Happy Birthday" sung by the staff, terribly. If there was anything more off-putting to your meal, it is that. The food itself is good with large portions of your usual American food - burgers and chips taking pride of place in the menu, with a lack of healthy food, like salads, particularly prominent. A typical standard burger meal will set you back a £10 and is tasty and filling. Drinks from the bar are very expensive indeed. A vodka and Coke was about £4. TGIs will never win any awards for its originality and food. Its fast-paced service in a bustling and noisy atmosphere with little regard to a "pleasant dining experience". If you're booking a party or hen night, I couldnt recommend it enough; otherwise I woluldn't bother - and certainly don't ever take a date there.
