I have long been a fan of TGI fridays, I have eaten frequently at TGI Friday's in Cardiff and Swansea, and while I lived in Newcastle also TGI's in Gateshead.
For those of you that haven't been to TGI Friday's it is an American style diner chain. The slogan for TGI's is 'In here, it's always Friday'. The decor is standard throughout the chain. The restaurant is decorated in American advertisments and memoribillia. The restaurant also has famous red and white canopies outside as well as brass railings and tiffany lamps inside. The staff are also dressed in the matching red and white.
If you go to TGI's on the weekend it can be busy and you may have to wait in the bar area if you haven't pre booked a table. The bar is square and centred in the middle of the restuarant. TGI's has an amazing selection of cocktails involving every type of alcohol you could think of. They have dedicated pages for gin, vodka, rum, whisky etc... you can also get non alcoholic cocktails for children and those who don't drink. The cocktails come in two sizes the larger range from £7 to £8. There is also a selection of bar snacks which include things like chicken wings and potato wedges.
Once you are shown to a table you are introduced to your waiter/waitress and they will then look after you for the whole duration of your meal. In all TGI's I have been impressed by how friendly the staff are.
In the day TGI's has offers of 2 courses for £9.99 which you can upgrade for a few quid extra to include a third course. You can also pay a little more for a slightly more expensive meal. On my most recent trip I went to TGI's in St Davids 2 Cardiff. I went for the lunchtime menu. I took my 6 month old daughter too. She was well catered for there is a separate mother and baby room which can only be accessed by asking the staff for a key so it is always clean and tidy. They also have several highchairs available as well as a childrens menu should you need one. The lunchtime menu has a good selection of courses. My partner and I always order 2 different starters and share so we chose Jack Daniel's chicken which is little strips of chicken coated in breadcrumbs and sesame seeds finally glazed with Jack Daniel's sauce and served with a salad, and we also ordered boneless wings which consists of chicken coated in Frank's Red Hot sauce with a pot of blue cheese and crunchy celery sticks. The restaurant was fairly busy our starter took about 10 minutes to arrive. The starters are also a decent size too. For our main course we both had a New York Strip, this consists of an 8oz sirloin steak served with a choice of jacket potato, chips or cheesy mash and seasoned vegetables. You also get the choice of a sauce you can have Jack Daniel's, peppercorn or blue cheese. I love the steak in TGI's you always get a really good cut of meat with hardly any fat, I hate cutting fat off so this is great for me. I chose the cheesy mash to go with mine which also contains little spring onions, the vegetables on the side were peppers, courgettes and brocolli. The main course was again a decent size and really filling. The food came almost as we finished our starter. The steaks were cooked really well, I had mine well done and my partner had his medium rare. To drink we just chose coke which is great as you get unlimited refills. The staff were attentive and as soon as my drink was running low they were asking if they could bring a top up. We really enjoyed our food the bill came to just short of £30 this was because we upgraded the main courses.
If you order from the main menu you get a large selection of starters a lot you can upgrade for 2 people by paying a little more. The menu is laid out really well, you get a page of steaks a page of chicken and a page of burgers. Some items on the menu I have tried include Jack Daniel's chicken, chicken fingers, various burgers and fajita's. The fajita's are amazing you get a tower brought to the table with the wraps kept warm at the bottom a layer containing the meat (steak or chicken) and the top which contains salsa, guacamole and sour cream as well as grated cheese and salad. They also have a fantastic selection of American desserts like chocolate fudge cake, brownies and huge sundaes.
I love going to TGI's and would recommend it to those who haven't been. It can be pricey if you order from the full menu and include alcoholic drinks a family of four could easily spend around £100 so it is best kept for a treat in that case. If you go on your birthday you can register online and get a round of cocktails free for up to 8 people and they also sing happy birthday to you and bring out a cake free of charge.
5 out of 5 from me. I have always had a really nice time going to TGI's.
Summary: Make everyday a Friday!
