My Wednesday at T.G.I Friday's.
Member Name: trayrope
Advantages: Great atmosphere, quick service, friendly staff, nice food.
Disadvantages: A little expensive, some dishes a little bland.
I have been to T.G.I Friday's in Meadowhall quite a few times and I have always enjoyed the food and the service and today was no exception. My Husband and I popped over to Meadowhall with our Son and his Fiancée for a goodbye meal as he is flying out to Afghanistan on Sunday.
The T.G.I's in Meadowhall is open fronted as it is part of the Oasis food complex. We waited at the front desk, next to a cool Harley Davidson, to be seated. In less then a minute we were greeted by a young lad who was to be our server today. He efficiently showed us to our seats and gave us a menu each. He took our drinks orders, on this occasion we each had a refillable coke. I think this is good value as for £2.69 you can have as many refills as you want. My Son and I only had the original drink but my Husband and future Daughter-in-law had quite a few refills.
While perusing the menu I has a chance to look at our surroundings, we were seated at the back of the restaurant in a booth. The booth was nice, comfortable and cosy and I felt that even though we were sat in a busy restaurant we had plenty of privacy to chat. The atmosphere in the restaurant was excellent and the music selection that was being played quite loudly was all modern American rock, it sounded as though someone had nicked the CD out of our car.
Our server gave us a few minutes to look at the menu and then came back to take our orders. My Husband and Son had the Steak, ribs and Prawns (£20.99), my future daughter had the Angus Burger without salad and sauce and I picked three dishes from the new Tappas menu I chose Chicken Skewers, Meatball Sliders and Taquito Bites (£12.99). At the time of ordering I was told that my dishes would come sooner than the rest of the tables as they are small dishes that are served as soon as they are prepeared.
A short while later my Chicken Skewers were served. They were nicely presents on a small dish. I had three chicken skewers coated in a sticky BBQ sauce served on a bed of shredded raw red cabbage and with the worlds crunchiest, skinny curly fries. The chicken skewers were delicious the chicken was moist and flavoursome and the bbq sauce was excellent. The curly fries were tooth chippingly hard and bland but strangely moreish. I gave the shredded red cabbage a wide berth. My next dish of Taquito Bites was not far behind. Again this was well presented and consisted of a rolled wrap filled with cheese and bacon which was sliced into five easy to pick up slices, the wrap and plate was generously garnished with chopped up green pepper and fresh tomato and I think there was some fresh chilli on there that I was not expecting as I got quite a heat kick at one point. The Taquito Bites were a bit of a let down, the wrap was floury and fresh and the chopped up bacon was nice but a little bland, the major let down for me was the use of bog standard mild red cheddar. Before my third dish turned up the others had been served there food but I will carry on describing my meal. My third dish of Meatball Sliders was quite an interesting looking affair. It consisted of three little meatballs coated in a tomato sauce with a dollop of fresh mozzarella and a deep fried basil leaf in a small American style bread cob. I was served three of these little creations. Again the presentation was excellent. I removed the Basil leaf as it was not very appetising and started on my little Meatball Sliders. The bread was soft and fresh and the meatballs were home made as was the sauce. The meatballs and sauce was not a patch on what I make myself at home but they were nice enough. I liked the variety offered by the Tappas menu and I was incredibly full after devouring my three little dishes. I thought the food was a little bland and the chef should be introduced to Mr Salt and Mrs Pepper at some point in his career.
My future daughters' meal looked nice enough although I thought the burger bun looked a little burnt she seemed happy enough. Despite asking for no salad her burger arrived with a full complement of rabbit food. The server quickly realised the mistake and removed her meal so the problem could be sorted. He retuned a minute later with apologies and a fresh saladless burger. My future daughter declared that her burger was very nice and she emptied her plate.
My Husband and Son's meals both looked nice with a generous serving of chips, ribs, steak, onion rings, battered prawns and some soggy looking steamed vegetables (Broccoli, string beans and red peppers). The ribs were excellent and the meat fell off the bone, I tried a small amount of rib meat and found it to be very tasty and moist. My Husband said the chips were nicely seasoned and crisp and that the battered prawns were delicious. He also enjoyed the home made onion rings. Both my Husband and Son felt the steak was a little dry and lacking in flavour, they had asked for it to be well done but in my opinion this is no reason for the steak to be dry. My Husband and Son both avoided the vegetables, I ate the Broccoli and found it to be a little mushy but passable.
Throughout the meal our server inconspicuously glided past the table and offered refills as and when needed. At the end of the meal he asked if we required anything else, when we all agreed that we had finished he efficiently cleared the table and brought the bill.
The meal came to a tad under £80 for the four of us. We paid by card but tipped £8 in cash.
The toilets in this T.G.I are upstairs but I can't imagine that would be much of an issue for less able customers as there is easy access to toilet facilities in the Oasis complex. I did not use the toilets but my Husband did and he said they were clean with plenty of toilet roll, hot water and soap.
In conclusion I thoroughly enjoyed my meal, the chef could be a little more adventurous in his flavours as some parts of my meal were a little bland but my Husband, Son and future Daughter enjoyed there meals. The atmosphere in T.G.I Friday's Meadowhall is excellent. All the staff are friendly and efficient. Customers are dealt with in a friendly manner and meals are served quickly.
