Advantages: good food, good value for money, good location

Disadvantages: None

I've only been a foodie for a few years now. Growing up in the valleys of Wales meant that going to nice restaurants was pretty much unheard of and the best you could get was a night in the local "posh pub" with their version of lasagne and garlic bread. But once I moved to Birmingham and becoming involved with a guy very much into food, I developed a real love for it and was determined to try every decent restaurant in a 3 mile radius of Birmingham city centre.

Thai Edge was one such restaurant. It's based very centrally in the acclaimed and renovated Brindley Place, around 10 minutes walk from the centre of Brum. The décor and atmosphere of the restaurant is very modern and minimalistic with a bamboo screen along almost the whole length of the building separating a waiting and bar area from the main restaurant. Staff are decked out in Thai style outfits and the tables are simply laid out. A far cry I'm sure, from restaurants actually in Thailand- but this is Britain, and for the setting of Brindley Place, it's décor is pretty much bang on.

There's only one word to describe the food at Thai Edge, and that is fantastic. The menu is quite long, with plenty of chicken, pork, beef and seafood dishes, most of which are very traditionally Thai. There are few set menus to try from but be warned - myself and a friend once had one of these and they were huge - 3 courses and they could easily have fed 4 people but unfortunately the amount is per person (around £19.50 each). I'd personally recommend choosing a la carte.

When I last went to Thai Edge, I had the Panaeng chicken dish which is very similar to red thai curry, in that it's covered in coconut milk, with strands of chilli and lime leaves to garnish. This is my favourite dish at Thai Edge and at £7.90, not bad value for money either. Most dishes tend to be around £8, with the curries being around £10 and seafood sometimes being slightly more. The sticky rice is around £3 extra, starters are £5 - £8 and drinks some in at around £3 for a bottled beer and £4 for a glass of wine. For the city centre, this really is good value for money and the food is excellent. I'd also recommend the lunch menu, which is £7.95 for two courses and has around 5 or 6 dishes on both the starter and the main menus. Service is also very good, quick and efficient and even when packed out, they always make an effort to make sure you are never left waiting long for your food.

To conclude, I am very pleased that I discovered Thai Edge as it really stands out as one of those restaurants you want to visit time and time again. The service, food and ambience is excellent and I have never had a bad experience there. Definitely one to look out for if in Birmingham - but do book on a Friday or Saturday night - I'm not the only one who thinks it's a great restaurant!

Summary: A place to visit time and time again
